Buy a Bitcoin node

A Bitcoin node downloads blockchain data and independently validates blocks and transactions against the network’s rules. A compatible wallet can connect to your node instead of relying on a third-party server for balances, history, and new transaction data.

The same hardware can also run Lightning, a block explorer, a Nostr relay, file storage, a password manager, and other self-hosted applications. The services available depend on the operating system, device resources, and configuration.

Why run your own Bitcoin node

When a wallet queries someone else’s server, its operator may learn which addresses and transactions are being requested. Connecting to your own node reduces that dependency and lets you verify data through your own Bitcoin Core installation.

A Lightning node runs as a separate service. It allows you to manage channels, payments, and liquidity, but it also requires configuration, monitoring, and channel-state backups. Installing Bitcoin Core alone does not automatically create a Lightning node.

A node is not a backup of a hardware or software wallet. Store the wallet recovery phrase and Lightning backup data separately. Blockchain data can be downloaded again, but it cannot recover lost private keys.

Ready-made node or DIY build

A ready-made server comes with matched storage and a server operating system. Start9 Server One 2025 runs StartOS and is currently offered with 16 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Applications are installed through a web interface, reducing the amount of manual setup.

For a DIY build, you can use a single-board computer or mini PC and install Bitcoin Core, umbrelOS, RaspiBlitz, or another compatible system. This approach gives you more freedom over the components, but you are responsible for storage, cooling, power, updates, and backups.

Which device should you choose

  • Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is offered with 8 GB of RAM. It is an energy-efficient base for a Bitcoin node and a few additional services. Only the board is included, so the power supply, case, microSD card, cables, and external SSD must be purchased separately.
  • Raspberry Pi 5 is available with 8 or 16 GB of RAM. It is faster, can use an NVMe drive through a separate M.2 HAT, and provides more capacity for multiple services. Only the board is included; sustained workloads require a compatible power supply, case, active cooling, and storage.
  • MeLE PCG02 is a fanless mini PC offered with an Intel N100, 8 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD. That drive is too small for a full archival Bitcoin node, so plan for a larger or external storage solution.
  • Start9 Server One 2025 is a ready-made private server with StartOS, 16 GB of RAM, and a 2 TB SSD. It suits Bitcoin, Lightning, and several self-hosted services without a DIY hardware build.

What to check before buying a node

  • Storage. As of 27 September 2026, the Bitcoin blockchain data set is about 771 GB before database indexes. A 1 TB SSD now leaves limited headroom, so 2 TB is a sensible choice for a full node, future growth, and additional services.
  • Memory. 8 GB is sufficient for Bitcoin Core and a modest service stack; 16 GB provides more headroom for Lightning, indexers, and other applications.
  • Connectivity. Initial synchronisation requires a stable internet connection, substantial data transfer, and time. Ethernet is generally more reliable than Wi-Fi for an always-on server.
  • Package contents. For a Raspberry Pi build, separately check the power supply, case, cooling, boot media, SSD, and storage adapter.
  • Security. Keep the operating system and applications updated, use a dedicated administrator password, and do not expose the management interface directly to the internet.
