Buy a private VPN router

A private VPN router creates a separate Wi-Fi network and can route traffic from connected devices through a VPN. A single WireGuard or OpenVPN profile is configured on the router, allowing laptops, phones, tablets, TVs, and other devices to use the protected connection without a separate VPN app on each one.

This category contains GL.iNet routers based on OpenWrt. They provide additional control over routing, DNS, device-specific policies, and VPN connections. A VPN subscription or provider configuration is purchased separately: the router itself is not a VPN service and does not guarantee anonymity.

When a private router is useful

While travelling, the router connects to hotel, apartment, coworking-space, or other third-party Wi-Fi, while your devices continue to use a familiar private network. This keeps one network name, password, and configuration. When the VPN is active, the router creates an encrypted tunnel to the selected provider’s server.

At home or in an office, the router can serve as the primary gateway or provide a separate network for a work laptop, node, smart devices, or other equipment. For cryptocurrency services, it adds a layer of network protection, but it does not replace a hardware wallet, security key, system updates, or careful address verification before signing a transaction.

VPN router or VPN app

An app protects only the phone or computer on which it is enabled. A router can apply the VPN to the entire network or only to selected devices. Compatible firmware may also provide a VPN kill switch, device-specific routing rules, and encrypted DNS settings.

Actual speed depends on the router, protocol, VPN server, and upstream connection. WireGuard is generally faster, while OpenVPN is supported by a broad range of services. For more about provider selection, no-logs policies, and leak testing, read our guide to what a VPN does.

How to choose a GL.iNet private router

  • GL.iNet Mango is an entry-level pocket router for basic travel use. It operates on 2.4 GHz, provides Wi-Fi speeds up to 300 Mbps, has 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, and uses micro-USB power.
  • GL.iNet Opal is a compact dual-band AC1200 router with Gigabit Ethernet and USB-C power. It suits travel, remote work, or a small room or apartment.
  • GL.iNet Beryl AX is a faster Wi-Fi 6 travel router with a 2.5 Gbps port, USB 3.0, and USB-C power.
  • GL.iNet Slate 7 is a compact Wi-Fi 7 model with a touchscreen for quick access to core controls, including VPN settings.
  • GL.iNet Flint 2 is a fixed Wi-Fi 6 router for home or office use, with two 2.5 Gbps ports and higher VPN performance.

What to check before ordering

  • Whether your VPN provider supports WireGuard or OpenVPN and supplies configuration files for routers.
  • How much speed you need through the VPN, as VPN throughput is usually lower than the router’s headline Wi-Fi or Ethernet rate.
  • Which ports, Wi-Fi bands, power input, and upstream connection modes your setup requires.
  • Whether you need device-specific rules, a VPN kill switch, encrypted DNS, or Tor. Feature availability depends on the model and firmware version.
