A metal seed phrase backup is a physical steel or titanium medium used to store a crypto wallet recovery phrase. Depending on the design, you record complete words, their first four letters, or their BIP39 word numbers. The backup lets you recover the same accounts in a compatible wallet if the original device is lost, damaged, or stolen.
A metal backup does not hold cryptocurrency and does not replace a hardware wallet. Its purpose is to protect the recovery information from water, fire, and physical damage more effectively than paper. For a clear explanation of recovery phrases and what happens when one is lost, see “Seed Phrase: What It Is and What Happens If You Lose It.”
A paper record can get wet, burn, fade, tear, or be discarded with ordinary documents. Steel and titanium cope better with heat, moisture, corrosion, and mechanical stress. Actual resistance depends on the complete product design and the way characters are recorded, not only on the metal itself, so check the specifications of the model you are considering.
Metal improves physical durability, but it does not encrypt or conceal a recovery phrase. Anyone who can read the words or their indices may be able to restore the wallet. A completed plate must therefore be protected as carefully as the assets it can unlock.
Start with the recovery format: the number of words, whether the wallet uses BIP39 or SLIP39, and the recording method supported by the product. Some backups hold 12 words, others hold 24, and certain models can store two separate phrases. If a product records only the first four letters, confirm that this method is covered by its instructions and the relevant word list.
Next, compare the material and the setup process. Steel models are usually more affordable, while titanium is lighter and more resistant to corrosion. Stamping may require a hammer, letter stamps, or a centre punch; some kits include the necessary tools. Once the backup is complete, check every word and its position, then use your wallet’s official backup-check feature if available. Never type a recovery phrase into an unfamiliar website.
Do not keep the backup next to the hardware wallet. Store the device and recovery copy in separate protected locations so that one fire, theft, or other incident cannot take both. A tamper-evident bag can help you notice if someone has accessed the backup.
Do not photograph, scan, upload, or send the recovery phrase through a messenger. Our guide “How to Store a Seed Phrase: 5 Safe Methods” compares practical storage options and the risks of each one.
