If you’re comparing the best hardware wallets in 2026, the first question is what you actually need one for. When crypto is held on an exchange, the exchange controls the private keys — not you. In February 2025, Bybit was hacked for roughly $1.4 billion. Before that came FTX, Celsius, Mt. Gox, and other platforms where users kept funds and ultimately lost access to them. After years of working with crypto, we’ve seen the same rule prove itself again and again: “not your keys, not your coins.” A hardware wallet keeps private keys offline inside a protected chip and isolates them from your computer or phone. Even if the connected device is infected with malware, the private keys are designed to remain inside the hardware wallet.
In 2026, the market is much broader than it was just a few years ago. Trezor effectively created the hardware wallet market. SatoshiLabs was founded in Prague in 2013, and the first Trezor One launched in 2014. More than a decade later, Trezor remains one of the best-known names in the category alongside Ledger.
One of Trezor’s defining features is its open-source firmware. The code is available on GitHub, so the device logic can be reviewed independently. That is a fundamental difference from Ledger, whose core operating system remains closed source.
Older Trezor One and Model T devices had known physical vulnerabilities that could matter if an attacker had possession of the wallet and specialized equipment. With the Safe line, Trezor moved to a Secure Element architecture to address that class of attack.
Current Trezor devices work with Trezor Suite, the company’s desktop and mobile app for receiving and sending assets, swapping supported coins, and using supported staking features.

Ledger’s biggest strength is the scale of its ecosystem. Ledger Wallet, previously known as Ledger Live, supports thousands of assets, staking, partner-based swaps, crypto purchases, NFTs, and dApp connectivity. Ledger also integrates with Coinbase, MetaMask, Uniswap, OpenSea, and many other services.
Newer models use CC EAL6+ certified Secure Elements. Nano X uses EAL5+, while Nano S Plus uses EAL6+. On top of the secure hardware runs Ledger’s own Ledger OS / BOLOS operating system. The company also operates Ledger Donjon, a security research team that studies hardware attacks and vulnerabilities in both Ledger and third-party devices.
The main criticism of Ledger is its closed-source Ledger OS firmware. Unlike Trezor or BitBox, the full code cannot be independently reviewed. Ledger offsets that trade-off with a long deployment history, external audits, and a bug bounty program.

Keep in mind: much of the premium goes toward the design, materials, curved screen, magnets, and Qi charging. Flex uses a Secure Element at the same certification level. Also, E-Ink has no backlight, so you need ambient light in the dark.

An important detail is that the display is controlled directly by the Secure Element. Keep in mind: mobility is limited — you need a cable, and it does not work with iPhone. The small screen is also less convenient for reviewing long addresses.
BitBox — a Swiss approach to security
BitBox is developed by Swiss company Shift Crypto, founded in Zurich in 2015. Where Trezor emphasizes openness and Ledger focuses on ecosystem scale, BitBox combines open-source software, minimalism, and privacy. The brand is much smaller than the two market leaders, but it has a strong reputation among experienced users.
BitBox firmware is open source and available on GitHub. The architecture uses a dedicated Secure Element to protect secrets alongside a microcontroller that handles the main logic. The device itself is intentionally understated and does not attract much attention.
Controls are built into touch sensors on the case, using taps, swipes, and holds. The interface takes a little getting used to, but it avoids both physical buttons and a touchscreen display.
One of BitBox’s signature features is microSD backup. The wallet can create an encrypted backup on a card that you store separately in a secure location. If you prefer, you can also write down a traditional BIP39 recovery phrase.
