Tether Wallet: How the Official USDT Wallet Works and Who It’s For
On April 14, 2026, Tether, the issuer of USDT, launched its official self-custody wallet, Tether Wallet (tether.wallet), giving users control over their private keys. The app lets you pay fees in the token you are sending and transfer funds using a username instead of a long address. We reviewed its features, terms of use and recovery options to explain where it is useful and what to consider before adding funds.
What is Tether Wallet, and how can you avoid fake apps?
Tether Wallet is available for iOS and Android. Its developer is Tether Data, S.A. de C.V., a company registered in El Salvador. The app is built on the Wallet Development Kit (WDK), Tether’s open-source toolkit that lets developers add wallet functionality to their own products.
The 12-word recovery phrase is generated on your phone, which also signs transactions. Under the terms of use, the developer cannot independently transfer funds from your address. Your account is also linked to an email address, which is used for the username service, address book recovery and access to your cloud backup.
Tether Wallet is separate from an account on tether.to, the service for issuing and redeeming USDT directly with Tether. That service requires full identity verification. According to Tether’s fee schedule, the minimum purchase or redemption amount is $100,000, while the redemption fee is 0.1% of the amount or $1,000, whichever is greater. You do not need such an account simply to hold or transfer USDT.
Download the wallet through the official website, wallet.tether.io, which links to the App Store and Google Play. The Android app’s identifier is
io.tether.wallet; the company also distributes the APK through its tetherto GitHub account and a room in the Keet messenger, both accessible from the same website. Scammers use the Tether brand in fake apps, Telegram “support” accounts and websites with recovery forms. Never share your 12 words or the information needed to decrypt your backup. To restore Tether Wallet, enter the phrase inside the genuine app, never on a website or in a conversation with someone claiming to offer support.Which assets and networks does Tether Wallet support?
Tether Wallet focuses on four assets: two dollar stablecoins, tokenized gold and bitcoin. Each has its own supported networks:
BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), Solana and TON are not listed as supported networks. Keep this in mind if you normally withdraw USDT from Binance using BEP-20 or use USDT on TON through Telegram Wallet. The app will not display funds sent on an unsupported network, and whether you can access them will depend on the network and address involved. Tether’s terms do not commit the company to assisting with these transfers.
How Tether Wallet works
Private keys and transaction signing
To create a wallet, you choose a username, enter your email address and verify it with a six-digit code sent by email, following the steps in the official instructions. The app creates private keys from the recovery phrase generated on your device, and transactions are signed on the phone before being sent to the network. Tether says the phrase is never sent to its servers in readable form.
A 12-word phrase following the BIP39 standard contains 128 bits of entropy, the random data used to create the wallet. A 24-word phrase encodes 256 bits of entropy. Both resist brute-force attacks when generated correctly, but exposing the phrase gives someone access to the funds regardless of its length.
Paying transfer fees in USDT
A standard USDT transfer on Ethereum requires ETH for fees, while Tron requires TRX or the relevant network resources. As a result, a transfer may be unavailable even when you have USDT in your balance. In Tether Wallet, an intermediary called a paymaster covers the network costs, and you pay those costs in the token you are sending. You do not need to buy the network’s native coin separately just to pay the fee for a USDT transfer. The app displays the fee before you confirm.
Before confirmation, the app shows how much the recipient will receive, the fee you will pay and the total deducted, both in the token and its dollar equivalent. If you choose Send Max, the fee is deducted from your balance, so the recipient receives less than the full balance. On Ethereum, costs can be substantial during periods of high demand even when paid in USDT. For a small transfer, compare fees across networks supported by both the sender and the recipient.
Your @tether.me username
During registration, you choose a name such as
[email protected], which another Tether Wallet user can enter instead of a blockchain address. Tether’s server finds the corresponding address on the selected network. According to the official FAQ, this currently works between Tether Wallet users for USDT, USAT and XAUT; for bitcoin over Lightning, it also works with other wallets that support LNURL. If you are receiving USDT from an exchange or a different wallet, give the sender your standard address and the network name. The username service works as a centralized directory: Tether’s server determines which address a name points to. The company can restrict or disable address lookups by username, although those restrictions do not themselves block transfers using standard addresses. Privacy also matters: if someone links your username to you and your blockchain addresses, they can view the public balances and transaction histories of those addresses. It is therefore better to keep the username used for regular payments separate from the addresses holding your main savings.
Buying and swapping
The Buy and Swap sections use third-party providers, and you enter into a transaction with the provider directly. When selecting offers, the app considers the expected amount you will receive and, for swaps, the completion time; the Buy section may also display a provider you have used before. Tether says it receives no compensation for directing users to a particular service, although its terms acknowledge possible conflicts of interest and the involvement of affiliated companies as counterparties. A swap between networks may involve several transactions through bridges, so check the route, final amount and provider’s terms before confirming.
Cloud backup and self-custody
In Tether Wallet, you can write down the 12 recovery words yourself and optionally create a cloud backup as well. Tether recommends the cloud option for easier recovery and claims it offers the same level of security. To assess this approach, consider where the encrypted data and its key are stored, and which accounts you need to recover the wallet.
For a cloud backup, the app generates an encryption key on your phone and uses it to encrypt the wallet data. The encrypted data is stored on Tether’s servers, while the key is kept in your iCloud or Google Drive. When restoring the wallet on a new phone, you verify your login using a one-time code sent by email and grant the app access to the same cloud account. The app then retrieves both components and restores the wallet on the device.
In this setup, Tether does not have the key to the encrypted file, and your cloud storage does not hold the file itself, so neither component is sufficient on its own. However, access to your email and cloud storage may depend on a single account. For example, if you register the wallet with a Gmail address and store the key in the same account’s Google Drive, an attacker with full access to that account could potentially complete both recovery steps. In that case, the wallet’s protection depends on the security of the entire Google Account. On an iPhone, also check your Apple Account’s security and recovery options.
For a small balance used for everyday spending, a cloud backup may be an option if your email and cloud account are well protected. Save your account’s backup sign-in codes in advance and check its recovery options. Bear in mind that Tether may change or discontinue the recovery service, so you need your own written record of the phrase whether or not you use cloud backup.
For your main savings, we recommend a separate hardware wallet with a recovery phrase backup on paper or metal. If you want to stop using a cloud backup you have already created, you can create a new wallet without one and transfer the funds to its new addresses. Turning off cloud backup does not isolate the keys from your smartphone: that requires a hardware device on which a new recovery phrase has been generated.
Tether Wallet limitations and risks to your funds
Before choosing Tether Wallet for regular use, consider its limitations:
USDT freezes by the issuer
Controlling your own private keys does not remove the USDT issuer’s powers. The token’s smart contracts on Ethereum and Tron allow Tether to blacklist addresses, blocking USDT transfers, and subsequently burn the frozen balance. Freezes occur at the token level, so your choice of wallet does not protect against them. A freeze can affect an address managed through Tether Wallet, MetaMask or a hardware wallet, as well as an exchange’s address. When returning stolen funds, Tether can burn tokens at a blocked address and issue an equivalent amount to victims or a court-designated address.
According to BlockSec’s data, as of July 26, 2026, there were 9,597 blacklisted addresses on Ethereum and Tron, with around $5.69 billion in frozen USDT. During 2025, Tether blacklisted 4,163 addresses and froze $1.26 billion. About $698 million in tokens was burned during the same year; that figure covers all burns during the year, including tokens frozen earlier. By year-end, 3.6% of the addresses blacklisted in 2025 had been removed from the list.
The scale of individual freezes is illustrated by Tether’s own announcement on April 23, 2026, confirming that it froze 344 million USDT at two addresses in coordination with US authorities.
Freezes mainly concern funds linked to fraud, hacks and sanctions. An ordinary user could face a risk after, for example, a P2P transaction with a counterparty whose funds come from criminal activity. Before receiving a large amount, consider checking the sender’s address with an AML service, which analyzes known links to fraudulent or sanctioned addresses. AML screening helps assess the origin of funds, but it does not rule out a later investigation or freeze. Spreading USDT across several addresses does not remove the issuer’s powers over the token either.
Tether Wallet vs. multichain wallets and hardware wallets
A hardware wallet differs primarily in how it stores keys and confirms transactions:
Tether Wallet is convenient for regular payments when you need to receive a payment or send a small amount without separately funding the network fee. We recommend keeping enough in your mobile wallet for current transactions and holding your main savings at addresses whose keys were generated on a hardware device. For network support and differences between models, see our guide to choosing a network and wallet for USDT.
For holding your main USDT balance, you could consider the Ledger Nano S Plus or Trezor Safe 3. These devices work with the manufacturer’s app or another compatible program; funds from Tether Wallet are transferred to a new address on the chosen network. Before buying, check support for the specific network you plan to use.

Tether Wallet is useful for the following needs:
Other needs may call for a different solution:
How to set up Tether Wallet securely
During setup, check where you are downloading the app from, how your accounts are protected and whether you will be able to recover access to the wallet:
Conclusion
Tether Wallet simplifies everyday transfers: you can pay fees in the token you are sending and use tether.me usernames when sending to other users of the app. For bitcoin over Lightning, usernames also work with other compatible wallets. Keep a small balance for regular payments and hold your main savings separately, with the keys isolated on a hardware device. You need your own written record of the recovery phrase whether or not you use cloud backup, and control over your private keys does not prevent the USDT issuer from freezing tokens.
