How to update the firmware of the Ledger Nano X
This guide walks you through how to update Ledger Nano X firmware to the latest version safely. At the time of writing, that’s firmware 2.1.0.
Before you start, check the following:
If you downloaded the app from any other source, we strongly recommend reinstalling it.
Even if you’re sure it’s safe, we strongly recommend checking it. The phrase may have been written on paper that fades over time, or on a card that can be lost. If the update fails and your recovery phrase is damaged or lost, your funds will be lost forever.
Let’s get started.
Connecting to a PC
1) Connect your Ledger Nano X to your computer and unlock the device. You can use a PC running Windows, macOS, or Linux.
2) Launch the Ledger Live app and select “My Ledger” in the left-hand menu.
3) Your device will show a request to connect to Ledger Live with the message “Allow Ledger manager” — approve the connection on the device (press both buttons at the same time).
Updating the firmware
If your Ledger Live is updated to the latest version, you’ll see an orange banner prompting you to update your Ledger Nano X firmware. However, the banner may not be available if the update hasn’t been released for your device yet. This is done to avoid overloading the servers and to prevent all devices from being affected at once in case of software bugs. The company gradually rolls out the update to each device. If you don’t see the banner, try waiting a few hours and check again.
1) Click the “Update firmware” button on the banner.
2) Make sure your recovery phrase is stored safely. If everything’s fine with your recovery phrase, check the box “I have my recovery phrase” and click “Continue“.
3) The firmware will be downloaded to your PC, and then transferred to your Ledger Nano X. During this process, you’ll see “Processing…” on the device screen.
4) Next, your device’s screen will display the firmware version you’re updating to.
Press the right button and confirm the update on the device. To do this, select “Confirm update” and press both buttons at the same time to confirm the firmware update.
5) Please wait a few minutes while the firmware is being installed on your Ledger Nano X. It’s important not to disconnect the device from the computer during the update, as this can cause the update to fail.
6) After the firmware update, you’ll see the PIN entry screen on your Ledger Nano X.
7) Enter your PIN on the Ledger Nano X. If the update was successful, a message saying “Firmware updated” will appear on your computer screen.
8) Ledger Live will then prompt you to reinstall all apps that were previously on your device. Confirm this by clicking the “Reinstall apps” button.
That’s it — you have successfully updated your Ledger Nano X firmware! 🎉
After the update, I see a “Welcome to Ledger Nano X” screen
Most likely, the Ledger Nano X update failed, and the device was reset. If this happened, you’ll need to restore access using your recovery phrase. Once access is restored, you can continue using your assets. You can find recovery information on the Ledger website.
My Ledger Nano X won’t connect to the phone via Bluetooth after the update
This can happen on some phone models. If you’re having issues with the Bluetooth connection, try unpairing the device in your phone’s Bluetooth settings. Then pair the device again to restore the connection.
