YubiKey 5Ci FIPS is the #1 security key that works with a wide range of online services and applications. Your username and password aren’t enough to protect your accounts. Using a security key as a form of two-factor authentication is a simple and proven method of protecting accounts.
We recommend that you, in addition to the main YubiKey, purchase a backup key in case the main is lost or stolen. A backup key is an additional key that will contain a copy of your main key. We recommend that you keep your backup key in a safe place, such as in a safe in your home.
The YubiKey 5 Series supports all the same protocols as the 4 Series but with the addition of the FIDO2 protocol. In addition to FIDO2, FIDO U2F, smart card (PIV), Yubico OTP, OpenPGP, OATH-TOTP, OATH-HOTP and Challenge-Response are supported. Normal security keys only support FIDO2 and U2F protocols.
All browsers, including Safari, are compatible with TOTP (one-time password) technology.
Also, most modern browsers already support FIDO U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) technology. But we still recommend to check the support before purchasing a device. Chromium browsers such as Google Chrome, Edge, Opera will definitely work out of the box, while in Mozilla Firefox you need to manually enable U2F support.
