YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS is part of the current YubiKey 5 FIPS Series running firmware 5.7.4, validated to FIPS 140-3 Overall Level 2. The cryptographic module also meets Physical Security Level 3 requirements, while the series supports NIST SP 800-63B requirements for AAL3. The key is designed for environments with formal requirements for hardware-based authentication.

With FIDO2/WebAuthn, authentication is cryptographically bound to the legitimate domain of the service. A fake website cannot reuse an authentication request intended for another domain, while private keys remain inside YubiKey’s secure hardware. This approach significantly reduces the risk of phishing and remote account takeover.

YubiKey 5 FIPS Series is designed for businesses, government agencies, financial institutions, IT infrastructure, and other environments with strict access security requirements. FIPS 140-3 validation allows YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS to be used where security policies or regulatory requirements call for validated cryptographic modules. The compact Nano form factor is particularly convenient for workstations and other devices where the key can remain plugged in.

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS supports FIDO2/WebAuthn for modern multi-factor and passwordless authentication. Passkeys and FIDO2 credentials are stored directly on the hardware key and do not require synchronization through a cloud account. The device supports up to 100 FIDO2 credentials, making it suitable for use with a large number of compatible services.

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS supports Smart Card PIV, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, OpenPGP, and Challenge-Response for enterprise authentication, one-time passwords, digital certificates, and other professional use cases. Secure Static Password and Yubico OTP are also supported. Thanks to its multi-protocol architecture, a single key can be used across different security systems.

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS can be registered with many independent services and used to protect email, password managers, cloud platforms, enterprise systems, VPNs, cryptocurrency exchanges, and other compatible accounts. The compact USB-C form factor allows the key to remain plugged into a work computer or laptop and be ready for authentication whenever needed.

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS sits almost entirely inside the USB-C port and is designed to remain connected to a single device for extended periods. Only a compact part of the key with the touch-sensitive area for confirming operations remains accessible. This form factor is particularly convenient for laptops and desktop computers where authentication is used regularly.

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS can be used to secure accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges and other financial platforms that support FIDO2/WebAuthn and hardware security keys. On compatible services, the physical key can be used as a multi-factor authentication method instead of SMS or authenticator app codes.

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS combines FIPS 140-3 Overall Level 2 validation, phishing-resistant FIDO2/WebAuthn authentication, and support for professional protocols in one of the most compact form factors in the series. The key features IP68 protection against water and dust, is built to withstand mechanical stress, and requires no battery or charging. The Nano form factor allows hardware protection to remain connected to your work device without taking up unnecessary space.

1x YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS security key

YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS adds a physical layer of protection to your accounts and supports modern FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware authentication. A username and password alone are not enough to reliably protect important accounts. Using a hardware key as an additional factor can significantly reduce the risk of phishing and credential theft.
FIPS 140-3 is a standard that defines security requirements for cryptographic modules. The current YubiKey 5 FIPS Series running firmware 5.7.4 is validated to FIPS 140-3 Overall Level 2, while the physical protection of the cryptographic module meets Physical Security Level 3. The series also supports NIST SP 800-63B requirements for AAL3.
Both models are compact multi-protocol Nano-form-factor hardware security keys with USB-C. The main difference is that YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS uses a FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic module and can operate in accordance with FIPS Approved Mode requirements. This is particularly important for government agencies, financial institutions, large enterprises, and other regulated environments.
If the key is used in an environment that requires formal FIPS 140-3 compliance, it must be properly initialized for operation in FIPS Approved Mode. YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS with firmware 5.7.4 ships with FIPS Approved Mode not yet activated, so the relevant applications and credentials must be configured according to Yubico’s official procedure.
U2F functionality is disabled on the FIPS 140-3 validated YubiKey 5 FIPS Series. FIDO2/WebAuthn is used for modern hardware authentication and supports multi-factor authentication, two-factor authentication, and passkeys.
Yes. When using FIDO2/WebAuthn, authentication is phishing-resistant. The authentication request is cryptographically bound to the service’s domain, so a fake website cannot use it to sign in to the legitimate site. For maximum protection, use FIDO2/WebAuthn on services that support the standard.
Yes, provided the exchange supports FIDO2/WebAuthn and hardware security keys. In that case, YubiKey can be registered as a multi-factor authentication method and used to protect sign-ins and other sensitive actions supported by the platform. Before setup, check which security methods are available in your account.
The Nano form factor is designed for situations where it is convenient to leave the hardware security key permanently connected to the USB-C port of a computer or another compatible device. Most of the housing sits inside the port, so the key takes up minimal space. When authentication is required, the user confirms the action by physically touching the accessible part of the YubiKey.
Для чего нужен формат Nano?
Yes. The Nano form factor is specifically designed for this type of use. The key can remain connected to a work computer or laptop and be used whenever needed. However, you should consider the device’s operating conditions and avoid situations where the exposed part of the key may be subjected to strong mechanical stress.
No. YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS does not support NFC and works via USB-C. If you need contactless authentication on a smartphone, consider YubiKey 5C NFC FIPS with USB-C and NFC or YubiKey 5 NFC FIPS with USB-A and NFC.
Compared with SMS and authenticator apps, YubiKey provides a higher level of protection. With FIDO2/WebAuthn, authentication is bound to the legitimate domain of the service, so authentication data cannot be captured through a fake website. This is especially valuable for users protecting critical work accounts, financial services, and cryptocurrency exchanges.
Yes. A single YubiKey can be used with many different services. It is not limited to one account or platform — the key is registered separately with each service and can be used for email, password managers, cryptocurrency exchanges, VPNs, cloud platforms, and enterprise systems.
Yes. YubiKey is not tied to a single computer and can be used with different compatible USB-C devices. However, the Nano form factor is primarily designed to remain in one port for extended periods, so the standard YubiKey 5C FIPS may be more convenient if you regularly move the key between devices.
We recommend adding a backup YubiKey to all important accounts in advance in case your primary key is lost or becomes unavailable. A backup key is not a copy of the primary key — it must be registered separately with each service. Store it in a secure location, such as a safe at home.
Private keys and FIDO credentials created inside YubiKey’s secure hardware are not designed to be exported to another device. This means a backup YubiKey must be registered separately with the services you use. It is best to set up your backup hardware key in advance.
YubiKey has no battery and does not require charging or its own internet connection. It receives power from the host device through USB-C. The online service where authentication takes place may still require the computer to be connected to the internet.
The core functionality of the YubiKey 5 FIPS Series is the same across the range, with models differing mainly in form factor and connectivity. YubiKey 5C NFC FIPS features USB-C and NFC, YubiKey 5 NFC FIPS uses USB-A and NFC, YubiKey 5Ci FIPS offers USB-C and Lightning, while YubiKey 5C FIPS uses USB-C. YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS also uses USB-C but features an ultra-compact form factor designed to remain plugged into the port for extended periods.
YubiKey 5C Nano FIPS works with modern browsers and services that support FIDO2/WebAuthn and other available protocols. Compatibility depends not only on the browser but also on the specific website, application, and operating system. You can find a list of popular compatible services in the Works with YubiKey.
