#Ledger tutorial. Battery problem: Charging stopped
Ledger Nano X is not charging: if you see “Battery problem” or “Charging stopped” on the screen, it does not mean your coins are gone. Your keys and funds remain safe; the issue is related to the battery or the charging conditions of the device.
Nano X is a Ledger model with a built-in 100 mAh battery. The “Charging stopped” message means the device has stopped charging by itself for safety reasons after detecting an abnormal battery condition. Access to your coins is tied to the seed phrase, so your funds remain in place even if the device does not turn on.
The steps below are based on Ledger’s official support articles: Battery problem: Charging stopped, Ledger Nano X battery conditioning, and Maximize battery life. The Ledger Wallet interface and the device menu may change slightly over time, so if a menu item looks different on your device, follow the logic of the step rather than the exact wording.
What “Battery problem – Charging stopped” means
According to Ledger’s official explanation, the device stops charging for safety reasons when it detects an error or an abnormal battery condition. This is a protective mechanism; the firmware itself is still working. You can dismiss the message from the screen by pressing both buttons at the same time, but the cause will remain until you fix it.
A full Nano X charge lasts for several hours of active use and several months in standby mode. The device charges via USB-C from any powered USB port, preferably with the included cable from a computer’s USB port.
According to Ledger’s specifications, the operating range of the device is 0 to 40°C, but battery-friendly conditions are narrower: 40-80% humidity and 20-25°C temperature. Nano X has no moisture protection, so if it comes into contact with liquid, turn it off immediately and dry it thoroughly before using it again. The battery is not removable and cannot be replaced, so the main strategy is simple: do not let the battery get into trouble in the first place.
Why Ledger Nano X stops charging
The message is the same, but there may be several causes behind it. First, rule out simple temperature-related scenarios, and only then move on to charge recovery procedures.
Temperature is too high
To protect the battery, Nano X stops charging when the temperature is abnormally high. If you are charging the device near a heat source or in a hot environment, disconnect it, move it away from the heat, let it cool down, and connect it again.
Keep in mind that using the device at very high temperatures can permanently reduce the battery’s lifespan, so hot cars, direct sunlight, and radiators are best avoided not only while charging.
Temperature is too low
The opposite case also applies: charging is blocked when the temperature is abnormally low. Move the device out of the cold and let it warm up, then warm the battery if needed. Do not disconnect the cable while warming the device.
Critical temperature: the device turns off
At critical temperature levels, Nano X automatically shuts down to protect the battery. The solution is the same: move the device away from strong heat or cold and let it return to normal temperature. If this happens repeatedly, contact support.
Charging module error on an old Ledger OS version
This applies only to Ledger OS 1.3.0 and earlier versions. In those versions, the device stops charging for safety reasons when it detects a charging module error. The fix is to update Ledger OS to the latest version. If the device is not responding and you cannot update it, that is already a reason to contact support.
General battery error
If the temperature is normal, the version is up to date, and charging still does not start, Ledger treats this as a battery error. The official recommendation in this case is simple: contact Ledger Support. Most often, this is already a hardware issue, which we cover below in the warranty section.
What to do if Ledger Nano X is not charging
Go in order: quick checks first, then device menu procedures, and only after that battery warming.
Quick check
Main procedure through Control Center
If it does not work, try turning the device off and on manually. If that does not help either, move on to the extended procedure.
Extended procedure
A device with a completely drained battery may need several power-off and power-on cycles. The procedure has worked if the warning disappears, the plug icon in the top-right corner changes to a battery with a lightning symbol, and the welcome screen appears. After that, leave Nano X charging for about 8 hours so the battery can reach a full charge.
Ledger Nano X is not charging after long storage: battery recovery
If Nano X has been unused for several weeks or months, a deeply discharged battery sometimes needs to be woken up manually by warming it. This is the same procedure Ledger calls battery conditioning.
We covered it in detail, with timings and steps, in a separate guide: Ledger Nano X does not turn on after long storage. In short: connect the device with a cable and hold it in your hands for a few minutes; the warmth helps bring the battery back into a working state. Do not disconnect the cable while warming the device.
Battery care to prevent the problem from coming back
The Nano X battery is not removable, so take care of its lifespan from the beginning. Ledger recommends the following.
When it is likely a defect and time to contact support
If you have gone through everything above, updated Ledger OS, ruled out overheating and overcooling, performed the main and extended procedures, warmed the battery, and “Charging stopped” still does not disappear, it is most likely a hardware battery fault.
At this point, you can take two routes at the same time. Officially, contact Ledger Support through support.ledger.com: describe the issue and the steps you have already tried, as this will speed up diagnostics. In parallel, contact us. If you bought the device from us, we help our customers free of charge: we will check together where the process stops, and if it is a warranty case, we will advise you and help arrange a return or replacement.
One more thing: the battery is not removable, and there is no separate battery replacement program. But even if the battery capacity has degraded so much that using the device wirelessly is almost impossible, it still works when kept connected to power through a USB cable. The wallet does not become a brick; you simply use it in wired mode.
If the issue is hardware-related and the device is under warranty, it may be accepted for return and replacement. The replacement procedure is described in a separate Ledger Support section: Return your product for replacement.
Your funds remain safe: private keys are tied to the seed phrase, and the device is only a tool. If Nano X does not turn on at all, you can restore the wallet from your seed phrase on another hardware wallet and move the funds. The important thing is that the seed is written down and stored in a secure place.
Where to buy and where to get help
We covered where to go for a malfunction above: officially through support.ledger.com, and if the device was bought from us, we help free of charge.
If you need a new Nano X or another model, you can order directly from Ledger or from us. At Lwallet, we deliver across Ukraine without customs hassle, accept payment in hryvnia, and provide technical support.
