The YubiKey 5 Series works well with crypto exchanges because it supports modern FIDO2 / WebAuthn and FIDO U2F protocols. These technologies are used by many popular exchanges to protect login, security settings changes, and other critical actions. A hardware key eliminates phishing and remote interception of confirmation codes.

Support depends on each exchange’s security implementation, but in most cases YubiKey can be used with major platforms such as Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, and other services where hardware 2FA is available. Activation is done in the account security settings and takes only a few minutes.

Compared to SMS and authenticator apps, YubiKey provides a higher level of security. It does not depend on a mobile network, SIM card, or smartphone, is resistant to phishing site attacks, and works only with trusted domains. This is especially important for users who regularly use exchanges and keep significant funds in their accounts.

One YubiKey can be used with many services at once. The key is not limited to a single account or platform — it is registered separately with each service and can be used for dozens or even hundreds of logins, including crypto exchanges, email services, VPNs, and corporate systems.

It is not possible to copy or clone a YubiKey. Cryptographic keys are stored inside a secure chip and cannot be extracted either programmatically or physically. Even with full access to the device, creating a duplicate is not possible.

The same key can be used across different devices and operating systems. The only requirement is that the service you use supports hardware security keys. The YubiKey itself is not tied to a specific device.

We recommend that you, in addition to the main YubiKey, purchase a backup key in case the main is lost or stolen. A backup key is an additional key that will contain a copy of your main key. We recommend that you keep your backup key in a safe place, such as in a safe in your home.

The YubiKey 5 Series supports all the same protocols as the 4 Series but with the addition of the FIDO2 protocol. In addition to FIDO2, FIDO U2F, smart card (PIV), Yubico OTP, OpenPGP, OATH-TOTP, OATH-HOTP and Challenge-Response are supported. Normal security keys only support FIDO2 and U2F protocols.

This depends on what protocol the service needs. All major browsers, including Safari, are compatible for OTP (one-time password).

FiDO U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) support depends on the browser and how the service implemented integration. Google Chrome will work out of the box, while Mozilla Firefox needs to manually enable U2F support. Other major browsers do not yet support the U2F protocol.
