#Safepal tutorial. How to update SafePal firmware on the S1, S1 Pro and X1: step-by-step guide
How to update SafePal firmware on the S1, S1 Pro and X1: the SafePal S1 and S1 Pro do not connect to the internet or a computer during normal use, while the X1 communicates with a phone over Bluetooth. That makes firmware updates less familiar than on many other devices: instead of tapping a button in an app, you download a file from the SafePal website and transfer it to the wallet over USB. This guide covers the entire process, which is largely the same for all three models.
SafePal adds new networks and features through firmware releases. For example, versions released on 22 June 2026 added support for non-EVM blockchains to subaccounts. At the time of publication in July 2026, the current versions are V1.0.80 for the S1 and S1 Pro and V1.0.33 for the X1. Always check the latest release on the official SafePal upgrade page.
SafePal states that firmware updates are not mandatory. A device running older firmware will continue to work. However, a new network or feature will not be available until you update, so it is worth checking for new versions from time to time.
How to update SafePal firmware: what you need
You only need a few things:
For a safe setup and backup routine, see our checklist “The first 30 minutes with a hardware wallet”.
Download the firmware from the official website
Open safepal.com/upgrade and select your model: S1, S1 Pro or X1. Enter the device SN on its upgrade page, then download the upgrade.bin firmware file to your computer.
Two firmware variants may be available for your device. They offer the same features and differ only in the included interface languages. Choose the version that contains the language you need.
Put the device into upgrade mode
Connect the wallet to your computer with a USB cable, turn it on, open the Upgrade section in Settings and manually select Enter Upgrade Mode. On the SafePal S1, the official path is: Settings → Upgrade → Backup already → Enter Upgrade Mode.
This step is essential: unless you manually enter upgrade mode, the computer will not detect the wallet as a storage device. Once the mode is active, a virtual drive similar to a USB flash drive will appear in Windows or macOS.
Did the drive fail to appear? First, make sure you actually selected Enter Upgrade Mode on the device. If the mode is already active, check the USB connection and try another cable and another computer port.
Copy the file and start the update
Drag the upgrade.bin file onto the wallet’s virtual drive, then select Upgrade on the device itself. You do not need to open or run the file on your computer; simply copy it to the drive.
The update takes approximately 1–3 minutes. Once it is complete, the device is ready to use again. You can check the installed firmware version in the About section of the wallet settings.
How to verify that the firmware is authentic
SafePal hardware wallets include a built-in firmware verification mechanism. A counterfeit or modified file should not install successfully on the device.
For an additional manual check, each firmware version has a unique SHA-256 hash listed on the download page. Calculate the SHA-256 hash of the downloaded file and compare it with the value published by SafePal. If the values match exactly, the file is authentic.
When to contact support
If you have checked the cable, USB port, filename and upgrade mode but the device is still not detected or the firmware will not install, SafePal recommends recording a short video of the entire process and submitting a request to official support. The video will help the team diagnose the problem more quickly.
If the device is new and does not work immediately after unboxing, contact the seller at the same time. At that point, the issue is no longer just setup and may require diagnosis or replacement.
Where to buy SafePal and get help
You can buy SafePal from the manufacturer’s official store, which is the primary source, but delivery to Ukraine may take longer and the parcel will go through international processing. You can also order a device from us: the wallets are already in Ukraine, and we are always happy to help with setup and firmware updates.
If you run into trouble updating the firmware after purchase, contact us. We will help you complete the process and identify the cause of the error regardless of where you bought the device.
