How to convert crypto to fiat: methods, risks and taxes
The ways you can convert crypto to fiat in Ukraine are changing quickly. Over the past year, exchanges have closed some fiat payment channels, banks have continued scrutinising risky transactions, and Ukraine’s parliament has moved towards a separate tax framework for crypto assets. If you do not keep up with these changes, you could face a blocked transaction, an unfavourable exchange rate or restrictions on your bank account. In this guide, we explain which conversion methods are available as of 30 September 2026, what risks they pose to your bank account and how to prepare.
Ukraine ranked seventh in the 2026 Chainalysis Global Crypto Adoption Index. Meanwhile, direct fiat payment channels on exchanges continue to change, banks assess P2P payments for risk, and the bill on taxing crypto assets is being prepared for its second reading.
Below, we explain how each method works, its risks and what to check before using it.
How to convert crypto to fiat: five options in 2026
P2P trading on exchanges
Peer-to-peer (P2P) trading lets two people buy and sell cryptocurrency directly through an exchange’s marketplace. You sell your crypto to a specific buyer, who sends money to your bank card or account. The exchange locks the coins in escrow during the trade and releases them to the buyer after you confirm receipt of payment. Escrow protects the crypto side of the trade, but does not guarantee the safety of the bank payment.
P2P can be convenient if you already have an exchange account and want to sell crypto without signing up for another service.
Which exchanges support hryvnia (UAH) in P2P?
Binance P2P supports trades in hryvnia. In late 2025, changes involving the provider Bifinity UAB affected some fiat payment methods. Separately, Binance announced the closure of UAH deposits and withdrawals through Fiat Trade UAH and the delisting of the USDT/UAH spot pair from 28 September 2026. Fiat Trade UAH and P2P are separate services. For P2P, check the current ads, limits, fees and ways to receive hryvnia in your account.
OKX P2P supports hryvnia. OKX states that it charges no service fee for P2P trading, although your chosen payment provider may charge its own fees. The P2P Express mode simplifies the ordering process. There is also a separate Block Trade service for larger trades, but UAH is not listed among its currencies in the official documentation. From 15 September 2026, OKX separates bank payment methods in its UAH market into “Card” and “IBAN”, so the payment details must match the method specified in the ad.
Bybit P2P has a USDT/UAH market with bank payment methods. The available banks and limits depend on the ad. Direct fiat services have separate restrictions: Bybit’s official list places Ukraine among the restricted identity-verification (KYC) countries for SWIFT in PLN and USD, as well as SEPA in EUR. This does not amount to a ban on all UAH P2P trading. Bybit Card eligibility is also governed by a separate card programme.
WhiteBIT P2P Express is an automated way to exchange USDT for UAH and vice versa. You enter the amount and payment details, while a third-party P2P provider processes the transaction. According to the official documentation, processing usually takes between one minute and an hour. There is no separate P2P Express fee, but conversion costs are reflected in the rate and final amount. UAH availability depends on the country recorded during your KYC identity verification.
The main P2P risk
P2P may look straightforward, but scammers also use this route. Two common schemes are:
Scheme 1: fake proof of payment. The buyer sends a forged SMS, message or screenshot that looks like confirmation from a bank. You confirm payment and release the coins even though no money has arrived. Check the actual credit in your banking app, rather than relying on the buyer’s messages or screenshots.
Scheme 2: payment from someone else’s card. The money arrives, the amount matches and you release the crypto. Later, you may discover that the transfer came from a compromised account or involved a third party who was being scammed. The payment may be disputed, and the bank may restrict transactions while it investigates. There is no single rule that automatically reverses every type of transfer, but the risk of a dispute and loss remains.
What to check before completing a P2P trade:
Crypto cards
This option is mainly useful if you want to spend crypto on everyday purchases. Depending on the product, the service converts a supported crypto asset into fiat when you fund the card or at the point of payment. You spend from your crypto balance, while the merchant receives ordinary money.
Well-known options include USDC Simplecard, Trustee Plus, WhiteBIT Nova and Bybit Card, but eligibility for Ukrainian users depends on the specific card programme and country of residence.
Before applying, compare fees for funding, conversion and spending in another currency, along with limits and cashback terms. We cover issuance requirements, fees and eligibility for Ukrainian users in our guide “Crypto cards in Ukraine in 2026: availability, fees and limits”. Our guide to withdrawing crypto to a bank card explains the difference between paying with a crypto card and receiving hryvnia in your account.
P2P between people you know
You send crypto to a friend or someone you know, and they transfer hryvnia to your card or account, or give you the agreed amount in cash. There is no intermediary, but blockchain fees and possible bank charges still apply. For foreign-currency transfers, check your bank’s current restrictions and available services separately.
This method can suit people in the IT community and freelancers who are paid in crypto. Smaller or regular exchanges between people who know each other may be cost-effective, but they require trust and a clear agreement on the rate, network and timing of payment. For larger amounts, finding someone with enough fiat may be harder. Trust does not remove tax obligations or bank checks.
Online exchange services
An online exchange service can be convenient if you do not want to find a buyer on an exchange yourself. You visit the website, choose a conversion route such as USDT TRC20 → UAH to a bank card, enter the amount and receiving details, send crypto to the supplied address and receive hryvnia. Before transferring, check the service’s reputation, the network, order terms and payout method. If individuals send you the hryvnia, your bank may view those payments as P2P transfers too.
Costs vary by conversion route, amount and service. A difference of roughly 0.5–4% can serve as a comparison guide, but individual offers may fall outside that range. Many services build their margin into the exchange rate: “no commission” does not mean you receive the market rate. For example, if the quoted rate is 2–3% worse than the price you are comparing it with, that difference is already part of your conversion cost. Compare the final amount you will receive, including network fees.
How to check an online exchange service
Ukraine’s online exchange market includes both long-established businesses and short-lived scam sites designed to take your crypto and disappear. Here are some checks to make:
Exchange-service aggregators and directories
Start with directories and comparison platforms rather than picking a service at random. Their features differ, so check your chosen conversion route on the website itself:
Compare the final amount on two or three platforms at the same time: rates, listed services and data update times may differ.
In-person exchange: when you need cash
If you need US dollars or euros in cash, an exchange at a physical office may be an option. Agree on the amount, rate and handover procedure in advance.
The process is straightforward: agree on the terms, visit the office, send crypto from your wallet and receive cash under the agreed procedure. No money is credited to your bank account in this trade, but risks involving the service, source-of-funds checks and tax obligations remain.
Where to find in-person exchange services
Physical exchange offices can be found in major cities, including Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Lviv and Kharkiv. Look through Obmify, Kurs.com.ua, Minfin or Crypto Summer if they cover your route or offer a city filter. Confirm the address, opening hours and availability of the currency you need before visiting.
When an in-person exchange makes sense
Assess the risks before sending a large amount to an unfamiliar service. Cash exchanges also attract scammers: risks include counterfeit notes, money being switched while counted, a sudden change of rate at the office and robbery. Check the service’s history, reviews and physical address, agree on the rate and amount in advance, insist on a proper office and count the money there. A proposal to meet in an apartment entrance or a car park is a reason to decline the trade.
Bank AML checks: risks and supporting documents
Banks assess transactions based on risk, and regular proceeds from crypto sales may require an explanation. The nature of the payments, the source of funds and whether the activity fits your financial profile are the main considerations.
What happens in practice
A bank may ask for an explanation or restrict transactions even for a small amount if the payments look unusual. The UAH 400,000 threshold applies to a category of financial transactions with specific characteristics defined by law; suspicious transactions can be checked regardless of their amount. There is no single confirmed threshold at which banks “block crypto transfers”.
What may attract your bank’s attention:
What could happen to your bank account?
If the transactions raise questions, possible outcomes include:
How to reduce the risks
What to do if your bank has already blocked your account
If you cannot access your money, first establish exactly what has been restricted: a particular payment, your card or account transactions. An exchange statement can form part of your explanation, but the bank assesses the full source-of-funds trail. Providing documents does not guarantee that restrictions will be lifted, particularly if the bank has decided to end the relationship. The following steps can help you obtain a response and keep a record of your enquiries.
How much can you receive on a card without questions?
There is no universal “safe amount”. The bank considers the source of funds, regularity of payments, counterparties and whether the transactions fit your financial profile.
According to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), a transaction is classified as a threshold transaction when it amounts to at least UAH 400,000 and has at least one characteristic specified in Article 20 of Law No. 361-IX. These can include cash transactions. This is not a monthly limit on incoming transfers or an automatic account block. Suspicious transactions can be reviewed at any amount.
In practice, banks look at the overall pattern: how many payments you receive each month, who sends them, how often and whether they fit your usual account activity. If your card previously received only your salary and now receives dozens of transfers from different people, the bank may ask for an explanation even if each payment is small.
The amounts below can help you plan which documents to prepare, but they are not permitted limits or predictions of how likely an account block is:
Practical steps:
5 mistakes that cost you money
Before converting, check that you are not making one of these five mistakes.
Taxes: current rules and the proposed changes
Specific rules for crypto assets are still being discussed, but tax obligations already exist. As of 30 September 2026, Bill No. 10225-d, adopted at its first reading on 3 September 2025, is being prepared for its second reading.
The tax base when selling crypto
According to State Tax Service guidance dated 13 May 2026, money an individual receives from selling cryptocurrency forms part of their annual taxable income. The general rates are 18% personal income tax (PIT) and a 5% military levy. The guidance describes the tax base as the amount received, rather than just the difference between purchase and sale prices. Each case should be assessed using the relevant documents.
The reduced rate in the transitional provisions
The published draft provides for 5% PIT on income from selling assets acquired before the law takes effect. The base for this relief is the proceeds received, not the profit. Budget Committee materials link it to the 2026 reporting year, so promising “a year after the law passes” would misrepresent this version of the draft.
Paying tax does not guarantee that your bank will have no questions. Evidence of the assets’ origin, sale documents and tax reporting serve different purposes, so keep the full documentary trail.
How to convert crypto to fiat: which option should you choose?
Compare the methods by your goal, costs and the main risk:
The times and costs in the table depend on the service, conversion route, amount and checks. Percentages for exchange services are rough guides and may differ from a specific quote. Compare the final amount you will receive; no route guarantees that you will avoid financial-monitoring checks.
What to watch next
Keep an eye on the following changes:
Choosing a method
There are several ways to convert crypto to fiat in Ukraine in 2026. Consider the final amount, counterparty safety, bank checks and taxes when choosing. Online services, P2P, crypto cards and cash exchanges carry different risks, which do not disappear when you switch methods.
If you need hryvnia in your account, compare a vetted online exchange service with P2P on an exchange where you already have an account. For everyday spending, consider a crypto card you are eligible for; for US dollars or euros in cash, use an exchange at a verified office. Prepare your documents before large or regular trades. In P2P, always verify the actual payment and sender details rather than relying only on the buyer’s rating.
From 2 February 2026, according to the State Financial Monitoring Service, new reporting formats and an electronic portal were introduced for exchanging information with reporting entities. This is a change to the reporting process, not a new universal card limit or automatic blocking of crypto payments. Keep proof of the source of funds and your conversion history.
