The card works perfectly with Ledger Stax, Ledger Flex and Ledger Gen5 via NFC. Its durable, water-resistant form factor is designed for years of storage without the risk of data loss.
The data on the card is encrypted inside a certified Secure Element chip with an EAL6+ security level. Without your Ledger and the correct PIN code, the encrypted backup cannot be accessed.
Recovery Key is IP68-rated — the card can withstand full immersion in water and is protected against dust. Unlike a paper sheet with a seed phrase, it will not get soaked, fade or become unusable.

It is a set of 24 words that lets you restore access to your blockchain assets if your Ledger device is lost, stolen or damaged. Ledger creates this phrase during the first setup of the device — it is the “root” of your private keys. Write it down carefully and store it in several secure places.
Ledger Recovery Key is a PIN-protected card that stores an encrypted copy of your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase. The card has no screen or buttons of its own — all actions are performed through the touchscreen of a compatible Ledger, while data exchange uses a secure NFC protocol with mutual authentication. To create a backup, simply tap the card to the back of the device, set a PIN code (4 to 8 digits) and confirm the operation. To restore access, tap the card to a new Ledger and enter the PIN.
Inside the card is a Secure Element chip certified to Common Criteria EAL6+ — the same level of protection used in bank cards, passports and Ledger hardware wallets themselves. The card is protected by a user PIN code (4–8 digits), and after three incorrect attempts all data is automatically erased. Communication with the Ledger device takes place through encrypted NFC with mutual authentication — the card and wallet verify each other, preventing substitution.
Ledger Recovery Key works only with touchscreen Ledger models that support NFC — currently Ledger Stax, Ledger Flex and Ledger Gen5. For correct operation, the device must have the latest firmware installed; you can update it through the Ledger Wallet app in the My Ledger section. The card is not compatible with Nano S Plus or Nano X because they do not have NFC.
No. Ledger Recovery Key is an additional backup method, not a replacement for the classic paper Recovery Sheet. The manufacturer recommends keeping the written 24 words and using Recovery Key for quick, convenient everyday recovery. This approach gives you several independent recovery points at once.
No, one card is designed to store one seed phrase. If you need to create backups for several wallets, you will need a separate card for each phrase.
If the card falls into the wrong hands, the data on it is protected by the PIN code — after three incorrect attempts, the contents are automatically erased. For complete peace of mind, however, we recommend moving your funds to a new wallet with a new seed phrase. Your access to the assets will not disappear: you can always restore the wallet using the paper Recovery Sheet, and then purchase a new card if you want to create a fresh backup.
