When deciding which Ledger to choose in 2026<\/strong>, consider how often you sign transactions, how complex they are, and whether you use a computer, an Android phone, or an iPhone. There are five current models, and the most expensive costs several times as much as the most affordable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

All five protect private keys in the same way: they generate and store them inside a certified Secure Element chip, run Ledger OS, and require you to confirm signing with the buttons or touchscreen on the Ledger itself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We\u2019ll explain the practical differences, what you get by paying more, and which device suits different uses. The specifications are based on official Ledger documentation as of October 2026.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Quick recommendations<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For long-term crypto storage and use mainly with a computer, Nano S Plus<\/strong> is sufficient. If you plan to use decentralized finance (DeFi) services, swap assets, stake crypto, or work with an iPhone, we recommend Nano Gen5<\/strong>, the most affordable Ledger with a touchscreen. Consider Flex<\/strong> for frequent transaction signing when a sharper display and sturdier construction matter, or Stax<\/strong> if you want the largest screen in the lineup. Nano X<\/strong> is a suitable option if you need Bluetooth on a limited budget.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Ledger lineup in 2026: two generations<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ledger divides its devices into two groups. The classic Nano S Plus and Nano X resemble USB sticks, with a small monochrome OLED screen, a resolution of 128 \u00d7 64 pixels, and two buttons for navigation. The next-generation models, Nano Gen5, Flex, and Stax, have E Ink touchscreens, Bluetooth, and NFC. Each comes with a Ledger Recovery Key card.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Reviews published a year or two ago may not cover Nano Gen5, the touchscreen model Ledger introduced in October 2025 as a more affordable alternative to Flex and Stax. Ledger Live has also been renamed Ledger Wallet, so older instructions use the previous name of the same app. The classic models have become cheaper, and Ledger now positions them mainly for cold storage, mobile use, or as backup wallets. The original Nano S has been discontinued and is no longer part of the current lineup.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The main differences between the five devices are their screens, connection options, chip certifications, and backup methods. Before buying, check the coins and networks you intend to use: they need compatible apps on the Ledger device and software through which you can manage your assets.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Screens and transaction review<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One of the main reasons to use a hardware wallet is that you can verify details on the device\u2019s own screen. Malware on a computer or phone can replace an address in the browser or clipboard. The Secure Element directly controls the Ledger screen<\/strong>, so always check the address and other details on the device before signing. The size and clarity of the display affect how easily you can read them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For a straightforward BTC or USDT transfer, a small OLED screen is sufficient: you use the buttons to review the address and amount, then confirm the transfer. DeFi operations involve more information to check, particularly when granting permission to spend tokens or interacting with a smart contract. For an approve operation, you sign a transaction; for a permit, you sign a message whose signature can also authorize spending your tokens. On a 128 \u00d7 64-pixel screen, you have to review these details a few lines at a time, so complex operations require more scrolling. Another risk is blind signing, where you sign data that the wallet cannot display in a readable form<\/strong>. This makes it difficult to verify exactly what you\u2019re agreeing to, which phishing sites exploit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Clear Signing displays operation details in a readable form, such as which tokens you are authorizing someone to spend, who receives that permission, and the permitted amount. All five models support the feature<\/strong>, although availability for a particular operation depends on support in the relevant app and smart contract. On the classic Nano models, the small screen limits how much information you can see at once. Transaction Check is available on Gen5, Flex, and Stax<\/strong>. For supported operations on Ethereum and Ethereum-compatible networks (EVM), Ledger Wallet sends the unsigned transaction to simulation services that assess its possible outcomes and risks. The device verifies that the report is authentic and matches the transaction, then displays the result on its screen. Review the operation details even if no warning appears, as the simulation may not detect every threat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Connectivity: cable, Bluetooth, and NFC<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Nano S Plus is a wired-only device: it works with computers and Android phones over USB but does not work with an iPhone<\/strong>. Nano X has Bluetooth and a built-in battery, allowing you to use it with an iPhone. All next-generation models have USB-C, Bluetooth, and NFC, while Stax also supports Qi wireless charging. Ledger Wallet\u2019s desktop app uses USB connections<\/strong>; Bluetooth is for the mobile app.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

NFC is used with the Recovery Key card, covered below, and the Ledger Security Key app. With this app, you can use Ledger as a hardware key for two-factor authentication (2FA) or sign in with a passkey, which replaces a password on compatible websites. Classic Nano models connect over USB for this purpose. Next-generation models support both USB and NFC; to sign in over NFC, you tap the device against a compatible phone. Nano X\u2019s Bluetooth connection cannot be used for Security Key on iPhone<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For passwordless sign-in, some websites require resident keys that store account credentials on the hardware key itself. Ledger Security Key does not currently support them, so check compatibility with the specific website before setting it up. Add a backup sign-in method as well, such as a second hardware key. Over Bluetooth, the phone sends the operation data to Ledger, and the device returns a signature while keeping the private key inside the Secure Element. Regardless of how you connect, check the details on the Ledger screen to avoid signing a malicious operation presented by a phishing site. If you don\u2019t need wireless connectivity, you can disable Bluetooth in the device settings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Secure Element certification<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Four of the five models use CC EAL6+ certified chips, while Nano X uses a CC EAL5+ chip. Both levels belong to Common Criteria, an international evaluation scheme; a higher level reflects a deeper and more rigorous evaluation of the chip. The certification level alone is not enough to determine which model suits you<\/strong>: it does not eliminate phishing, unwanted transaction approvals, or risks from insecure seed phrase storage. When comparing Nano X with the other models, bear in mind that even the cheaper Nano S Plus uses a chip with a higher certification level.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Backups: seed phrase, Recovery Key, and Ledger Recover<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

When you create a new wallet, all five models generate a standard 24-word seed phrase<\/strong>, which you write on the Recovery Sheet included in the box. This is your primary backup and lets you restore the wallet on another Ledger device. Ledger Recovery Key is included with Gen5, Flex, and Stax<\/strong>. This NFC card stores an encrypted backup of your seed phrase protected by a PIN. To use it for recovery, first create a backup on the card<\/strong> by following the Ledger device\u2019s instructions. When restoring a wallet, tap the card against a compatible NFC-enabled Ledger and enter the card\u2019s PIN on the device screen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We recommend using Recovery Key as an additional backup while keeping your seed phrase on paper or metal as well. The card provides access to the wallet, so store it separately from your device and never keep its PIN beside it. The card does not back up your passphrase<\/strong>: if you use this additional secret phrase, you need to record it separately.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ledger Recover is a separate paid subscription service<\/strong> provided by Coincover. It lets you regain access after identity verification: the backup data needed to restore your private keys is split into three encrypted fragments held separately by Coincover, Ledger, and EscrowTech. The service is optional, and creating this backup requires your confirmation on the device. Users with Ukrainian identity documents can subscribe using a passport; Ukrainian ID cards are not currently accepted. We do not recommend Ledger Recover as your primary backup method, as you rely on the companies holding the encrypted fragments and on their recovery procedure. Storing this data with third-party companies was itself a source of criticism when the service launched in 2023.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A closer look at each model<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ledger Nano S Plus<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Nano S Plus is the most affordable Ledger and a good fit for long-term storage. Like Stax, it uses an EAL6+ certified chip, but it has no battery or wireless connectivity. If you only use your wallet once every few months, having no battery is convenient because there is no charge level or battery condition to monitor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Its main limitations are the screen and connectivity: the small display and button controls make complex DeFi operations less convenient to review, and the device does not work with an iPhone. Its capabilities are sufficient if you buy BTC, ETH, or USDT on an exchange once a month and transfer it to your Ledger for storage. If you sign approve transactions on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) every day, however, repeatedly scrolling through the details can become tiring and encourage rushed confirmations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We recommend Nano S Plus as a first wallet for long-term storage<\/strong> if you plan to connect it to a computer. If you already own a touchscreen Ledger, it also makes a suitable backup device<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
