Before choosing a model, it’s worth understanding how its security works and how easy it will be to regain access to your funds if the wallet is lost or breaks. We’ll also look at the risk of physical coercion, convenience for everyday transactions, and how each device holds up in long-term storage.

The Short Answer

Ledger Flex is worth considering if you sign transactions often, want a screen that stays readable in direct sunlight, and would like to use a second PIN for a hidden wallet. What matters for your choice is which parts of the system can be independently verified and which manufacturer claims you’ll have to take on trust.

Ledger Flex: Private Keys and Screen Controlled by the Secure Element

Private keys are generated and stored inside the ST33K1M5 Secure Element. The chip is CC EAL6+ certified and directly drives the secure display: the data you confirm is shown by the same component that performs key operations. This limits the ability of less secure components to tamper with what’s displayed.

The full code of Ledger OS running on the Secure Element isn’t public, so outside researchers can’t verify the entire implementation from open source code. Ledger Recover, announced in 2023, showed that the firmware is capable of exporting encrypted fragments of the secret for recovery purposes. The service is paid and opt-in, and creating such a backup requires separate setup and confirmation on the device. Simply connecting to Ledger Wallet does not trigger any transfer of secret fragments.

Trezor Safe 7: Three Hardware Chips and Open-Source Firmware

The STM32U5 microcontroller runs the open-source firmware and stores the wallet secret in encrypted form. Decrypting it requires secrets from both Secure Elements — OPTIGA Trust M and TROPIC01 — plus your PIN, so compromising a single chip isn’t enough to extract the private keys.

On the Safe 7, the screen is controlled by the microcontroller running open-source firmware, so researchers can inspect the code that processes transactions and displays data. TROPIC01’s architecture is also open to independent audit, whereas the internal firmware of the second Secure Element, OPTIGA Trust M, is closed source.

What We Know About the TROPIC01 Vulnerability

On June 3, 2026, Trezor published an explanation of a TROPIC01 vulnerability discovered by the Ledger Donjon team during an independent audit of the chip, which Tropic Square had provided for review. Three details matter for Safe 7 owners:

The attack requires physical access and specialized lab equipment: the chip has to be removed from the device, its package prepared, and laser fault injection applied.

An attacker can extract from TROPIC01 one of the three secrets involved in protecting the wallet. This chip doesn’t store the seed or private keys, and the other two hardware layers remain in place.

The hardware vulnerability can’t be fully fixed with a remote firmware update. Tropic Square is working on changes for the next chip revision, but Trezor hasn’t said when it will make its way into the Safe 7.

This lab scenario is worth keeping in mind if you hold a significant amount and expect a targeted attack after the device is stolen. For extra protection, you can use a strong passphrase — a separate password for your wallet, which you’ll also need for recovery. We’ll cover its benefits and risks in Question 3.

This episode shows the value of independent audits: the chip was handed to a competitor, the issue was disclosed publicly, and device owners were able to assess its implications. Open source code alone isn’t enough to judge resistance to physical attacks, so it’s worth also reading research findings and manufacturers’ explanations.

Question 2. How Will You Store Your Backup, and Will You Pass Access On to Family?

A wallet backup is the set of recovery words, often called a seed phrase. You’ll need it if the device is lost or breaks, so it’s worth choosing a format during setup that will also work on another compatible wallet.

20-Word Backup Compatibility

By default, the Safe 7 creates a 20-word SLIP39 backup. The Flex creates a 24-word BIP39 phrase and can restore 12-, 18-, or 24-word BIP39 phrases, but it doesn’t support SLIP39. A 20-word Trezor backup can be used on another compatible device or in software that supports SLIP39, but there are fewer options than for BIP39. The standard is open and isn’t tied exclusively to Trezor.

If broad backup compatibility is your priority, choose 12- or 24-word BIP39 when creating the wallet on the Safe 7. Trezor Suite doesn’t let you switch the same wallet between BIP39 and SLIP39: the usual approach is to create a wallet in the format you need and move your funds to it. When restoring on another device, also check support for the networks you need, derivation paths, and the passphrase if you used one.

What SLIP39 Gives You

For a new SLIP39 wallet, the Safe 7 supports multi-share backups: you can split the backup into, for example, 3 shares, any 2 of which are enough for recovery. If you keep one share at home, another in a bank safe deposit box, and the third with a relative, you can still recover the wallet from the other two if one is lost. A single share isn’t enough for an attacker to access your funds. Your addresses stay the same, so you don’t need to move your funds.

After upgrading from single-share to multi-share, the old single-share backup remains valid and can restore the wallet on its own. First verify the new shares with the Check backup feature in Trezor Suite, and only then decide whether to keep the old copy. If you plan to pass access on to family, include clear instructions: where to find the shares, how many are needed, and whether a passphrase is used. We explain how to store and protect your backups in our guide to storing a seed phrase.

What Ledger Flex Offers

Ledger’s 24-word BIP39 backup can be restored in any other wallet that supports this format and the networks you need. The Flex currently ships with a Ledger Recovery Key — an NFC card with its own Secure Element and PIN that stores a protected copy of your recovery phrase and complements your primary written record of the 24 words. The paid Ledger Recover service relies on identity verification and has encrypted fragments of the secret stored by third-party companies; the Flex has no built-in local SLIP39 scheme.

Question 3. Are You Factoring In the Risk of Physical Coercion?

If you’re forced to unlock your wallet, both devices let you open a separate wallet with a small amount while keeping your main funds in a hidden wallet protected by a passphrase. The difference lies in how you access the hidden accounts and whether you can quickly wipe the device.

The Ledger Flex lets you link a passphrase to a second PIN. Your regular PIN opens the standard wallet, where you can keep a small amount, while the second PIN opens the hidden wallet with your main funds. Showing the standard wallet only takes unlocking the device with your regular PIN, and you don’t have to type a long passphrase every time.

On the Trezor Safe 7, you can enter the passphrase directly on the device’s touchscreen without using your computer keyboard. Each passphrase opens a separate hidden wallet. There’s also a wipe code — a separate code you set up in advance that wipes the device when entered, while still letting you restore from your backup.

The Flex wipes itself after 3 consecutive failed PIN attempts, the Safe 7 after 10. A lower limit leaves fewer attempts for guessing the code, but accidental typos when entering your PIN can also trigger a reset. After a reset, you’ll need the correct backup and your passphrase, if you used one; without them or some other access to the keys, the wallet can’t be recovered.

[vc_message color=”warning” message_box_style=”classic” message_box_color=”alert-warning” style=”rounded”]

A strong passphrase adds protection if someone else gets hold of your seed phrase but doesn’t know this password. A short or predictable passphrase can be guessed, and a hidden wallet won’t protect you from coercion if the attacker knows it exists and demands that you open it. Entering a wipe code doesn’t remove the physical threat either. Recovering a hidden wallet requires the exact passphrase: a different letter case, an extra space, or any other changed character will open a different wallet. Store the passphrase separately from your backup and test recovery before transferring a significant amount.

[/vc_message]

Question 4. If you only use the wallet once a quarter, these differences will most likely matter less than price and how you store your backup.

Screen

The Flex has a larger screen with more pixels: 2.84 inches and 480×600 versus 2.5 inches and 520×380 on the Safe 7. E Ink is easy to read in sunlight and keeps displaying an image even when the device is off. The larger area can make it easier to review long addresses and approve parameters — the permission that allows a contract to spend your tokens — though the amount of scrolling also depends on the app’s interface. E Ink refreshes more slowly and displays only shades of gray.

The Safe 7 has a color screen with 700 nits of brightness and haptic feedback. Color helps distinguish interface elements and warnings, and the faster refresh rate makes navigation smoother than on E Ink.

Both manufacturers are developing clear signing — showing transaction contents in human-readable form. But the app first has to decode the contract data before the device can show you what you’re signing. Don’t approve an action whose contents you can’t verify on the wallet’s screen, especially if all you see is hexadecimal data. A fake decentralized application (dApp) can swap the expected operation for a transfer or a token spending approval, and screen size alone won’t prevent that.

Bluetooth, Mobile, and NFC

The Safe 7 works over Bluetooth with both phones and computers, while the Flex uses Bluetooth with iOS and Android but requires USB-C for Ledger Wallet on a computer. The connection carries commands and data to be signed, and private keys stay inside the hardware wallet during normal use. On the Safe 7, Bluetooth and USB connections are secured by the open Trezor Host Protocol (THP), and pairing requires confirmation on the device. Bluetooth can be turned off on both models.

With an iPhone, the Safe 7 signs transactions over Bluetooth, since connecting a Trezor via USB-C isn’t supported on iOS. The Flex uses Bluetooth as well. Its NFC is designed for Ledger Recovery Key and Ledger Security Key: the former helps you restore your wallet, while the latter lets you use the device to sign in to compatible accounts. NFC isn’t a separate way to connect the Flex to DeFi apps.

Networks and Apps

Trezor Suite natively supports the TRON network, TRX, and USDT on TRC-20; TRON support left experimental mode in June 2026. TRX staking is available in the desktop version of Suite, while on mobile you can view your staking and manage transfers. Suite includes WalletConnect for connecting to compatible dApps, but check support for the specific service and network separately. If USDT is your main asset, also compare networks and transfer costs in our guide to hardware wallets for USDT.

Ledger Live was renamed Ledger Wallet in October 2025. To work with different coins on the Flex, you install the corresponding apps; the manufacturer lists 1.5 MB of storage and gives a rough guide of about 10–17 apps, depending on their size. This is only an estimate, and My Ledger shows the exact storage usage. Removing an app doesn’t delete your keys or funds, so you can reinstall it whenever you need it.

Both models work with third-party wallets, including MetaMask and Rabby for EVM networks, as well as Bitcoin clients. For the Safe 7, any app that uses Trezor Connect must support the new connection method via Trezor Suite; the old Connect pop-up won’t work with it. For the Flex, also check whether the third-party wallet has moved to Device Management Kit (DMK), Ledger’s new connection method: since mid-September 2026, older integrations may fail to sign certain transaction types. Check support for the Safe 7 or Flex specifically in the current version of the app you need, since compatibility with another model from the same manufacturer doesn’t confirm it on its own.

Question 5. The Safe 7 is designed with this in mind: it has a LiFePO₄ battery, and its case has a stated dust and splash resistance rating.

According to Trezor, the Safe 7’s LiFePO₄ battery withstands up to four times as many charge cycles as standard lithium batteries and is designed for long-term storage, including in a discharged state. The aluminum body is rated IP54 — protected against dust and splashes, with no stated protection against submersion. The Safe 7 operates at temperatures from 0 to 45 °C and supports Qi2-compatible wireless charging; the battery isn’t user-replaceable.

The Flex has a 200 mAh lithium battery, for which Ledger claims up to 10 hours of use. The device charges via USB-C, and the manufacturer doesn’t specify an IP rating. If the wallet has been sitting unused for a long time, check the charge before you need it.

Both devices can run on USB-C power with a drained battery; Trezor also explicitly states that the Safe 7 can be powered by cable if the battery fails. For storage over many years, a reliable backup matters more than keeping the device itself intact: with it, you can restore access on a compatible wallet even if the old one was damaged by moisture or stopped working.

What “Quantum-Ready” Means

On the Safe 7, post-quantum cryptography protects the device’s internal checks. Trezor cites the SLH-DSA-128 algorithm for verifying the bootloader and firmware, and in May 2026 it added ML-DSA-44 to device authenticity checks. These mechanisms are meant to make the corresponding signatures harder to forge in the future, once quantum computers capable of breaking classical schemes arrive.

These internal checks don’t change the transaction signing algorithms used in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Protecting the networks themselves from quantum attacks requires changes to their protocols. Buying a Safe 7 today doesn’t give your BTC or ETH any additional post-quantum resistance.

For a device you plan to use for years, securing the boot process and updates does matter. Still, when choosing between the Safe 7 and the Flex, start by assessing your current needs: backup, support for the networks you use, connection method, and transaction verification.

Common Scenarios: Which to Choose

Your situation

What to choose

Why

Daily transactions and DeFi, often outdoors

Ledger Flex, if E Ink works for you

Larger screen that’s easy to read in sunlight; check support for the dApp you need

Mostly using USDT on TRON

Either

Both natively support TRON and TRC-20

Bitcoin only, open source is a must

Trezor Safe 7 with Bitcoin-only firmware

Open-source firmware, minimal extra code

Planning to pass access on to family

Trezor Safe 7

Multi-share lets you distribute the backup; your family will need recovery instructions

Need broad backup compatibility with other manufacturers

Either; choose BIP39 on the Safe 7

BIP39 is widely supported; networks, passphrase, and derivation paths must also match

Want to open a hidden wallet with a separate PIN

Ledger Flex

A passphrase can be linked to a second PIN

Device sits in a safe for years

Trezor Safe 7

LiFePO₄, IP54, and an aluminum body; a separately stored backup is still essential

If You’re Switching from One Device to the Other

When moving from Ledger to Trezor, you can restore your wallet on the Safe 7 from a compatible BIP39 backup. However, Ethereum and other networks may use different derivation paths — the rules for generating addresses from a single seed. As a result, some accounts may not show up in Trezor Suite automatically, even though the funds remain at the old addresses. Before making any transfers, verify the addresses of the accounts you need and check how your chosen app handles the previous wallet’s paths.

When moving from Trezor to Ledger, a 20-word SLIP39 backup won’t work, since Ledger doesn’t support this format. If your Trezor wallet used BIP39, you can restore it on the Flex after checking the same compatibility conditions.

To avoid carrying an old seed over between devices or hunting for accounts on different derivation paths, you can create a new wallet on the new device. First write down and verify its backup, check the receiving address on the device screen, and send a small test amount; once it arrives, transfer the rest. This kind of migration incurs network fees, so on networks with tokens, keep enough of the native coin to cover them.

Multisig with the Safe 7 and Flex

For a significant amount of Bitcoin, you might consider a 2-of-3 multisig, where any two of three independent keys must sign to move funds. Using devices from different manufacturers helps reduce dependence on a single hardware or software implementation. If you plan to use the Safe 7 and Flex as two of the three signers, check in advance that your Bitcoin client supports both models; Sparrow is one client you can use to set up this kind of scheme. Each of the three signers needs its own seed and backup; in addition, save the multisig wallet configuration, which contains information about all of its keys and signing rules. Loading the same seed onto two devices doesn’t create two independent keys.

Where to Buy and How Much It Costs

See current prices for the Trezor Safe 7 and Ledger Flex in our catalog: they depend on the bundle, promotions, exchange rates, and availability. We deliver orders across Ukraine and provide warranty service and support in Ukrainian. If you’re comparing offers from other stores, check the seller against the Trezor or Ledger official reseller lists. Avoid used devices and listings that come with a pre-generated seed phrase, especially from unknown sellers on marketplaces or OLX.

What to Check After You Receive It

During initial setup, run the device authenticity check: Genuine Check in Ledger Wallet or the Safe 7 authenticity check in Trezor Suite. If the check fails, don’t transfer any funds — contact us or the manufacturer’s support to find out why. A card with words already written on it is reason enough not to use the device: a new wallet should never come with a pre-generated seed phrase.

Before your first transfer, compare the full receiving address on the device screen with the address in the app, and after copying it, also with the address field in the service you’re sending from. Make sure the network matches, and only then send a small test amount. If the addresses differ, stop and find out why: it could be malware swapping the address, but it could also be a mistake in choosing the account or network.

Trezor Safe 7 vs Ledger Flex: Which Should You Choose?

The Ledger Flex is a good choice if the E Ink screen suits you and you want NFC features and a second PIN for a hidden wallet. Its Secure Element stores the keys and drives the screen, while the full Ledger OS code remains closed. The Trezor Safe 7 offers open-source firmware, multi-share backups, and Bluetooth for both phone and computer; its architecture includes TROPIC01, which has a known lab-only vulnerability, but compromising this chip isn’t enough to access funds because other layers of protection remain. Choose based on the features you need and the security model you’re comfortable with.

Before transferring a significant amount, verify your backup using the device’s built-in check, and if you use a passphrase, make sure you can open the same hidden wallet again. Enter your recovery words only on the hardware wallet — never on websites or in “support” forms.
