Ledger Nano Gen5 launched in October 2025 as the first Nano with a touchscreen. Its features bring it closer to Flex and Stax than to the classic Nano X and Nano S Plus, which Ledger now positions primarily as backup devices. The box includes Ledger Recovery Key, a PIN-protected NFC backup card<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This guide covers Gen5\u2019s strengths and limitations, walks you through setup from unboxing to your first transaction, and explains what Recovery Key stores and when it cannot restore access.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The instructions and specifications were checked against Ledger\u2019s documentation in October 2026. Button labels and menu items may change with Ledger OS and Ledger Wallet updates, so follow the on-screen prompts during setup and refer to the official Nano Gen5 user manual<\/a> when needed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What is Ledger Nano Gen5, and who is it for?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n

With the launch of Gen5, Ledger began using the term \u201csigner\u201d more widely to describe a device that signs transactions. The underlying principle is unchanged: your private keys stay inside the Secure Element<\/strong>, and the device signs transactions that you approve on its screen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gen5 is a good fit if you sign transactions regularly, use DeFi or EVM networks (Ethereum and compatible blockchains), want to manage your wallet from a phone over Bluetooth, and would rather avoid paying more for Flex. If you only plan to hold bitcoin and use the wallet once every six months, the touchscreen and Bluetooth may not justify the extra cost. Simpler devices such as Nano S Plus<\/a> or Trezor Safe 3<\/a> can suit that use case.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The screen and Clear Signing<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The main reason to choose Gen5 over Nano X is its larger touchscreen<\/strong>, which makes long addresses and transaction details easier to review. On the Nano X\u2019s 128 \u00d7 64-pixel display, you have to read this information in small sections. Clear Signing<\/a> presents the details of supported operations in a readable form, such as the amount being sent, the recipient, or a permission granted to a contract. Clear Signing support depends on the network, app, and specific operation<\/strong>, so it cannot display every request this way. If the device asks you to use blind signing, which means signing data without seeing its full contents, establish what you are approving before you proceed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The E Ink screen has no backlight, so you will need an external light source in the dark. It refreshes more slowly than OLED but retains an image without continuous power, reducing energy use while the device is idle.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Transaction Check<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Transaction Check works on EVM networks, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Polygon. You can enable it when preparing a transaction in Ledger Wallet: the app sends the unsigned transaction to third-party services, including Blockaid, which simulate its execution and return a signed report. Gen5 verifies the report\u2019s authenticity and checks that it matches the transaction<\/strong>, then displays a risk assessment. While Clear Signing lets you read the operation\u2019s details, Transaction Check can warn you, for example, that the recipient\u2019s address belongs to a malicious actor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Transaction Check requires your consent to share unsigned transaction data with third-party services. It may identify a suspicious address or contract, but the absence of a warning does not mean the operation is safe<\/strong>. Review the details on Gen5\u2019s screen and make sure you trust the site that sent the request. If you do not want to share this data, leave Transaction Check disabled.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Bluetooth and NFC<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Over Bluetooth, Gen5 exchanges the data needed to sign transactions with Ledger Wallet on your phone. Private keys remain inside the Secure Element<\/strong>, and the app receives the completed signature. If you use Ledger Wallet on a computer, connect Gen5 over USB, as the desktop app does not support Bluetooth. You can turn off Bluetooth on the device when using it this way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gen5 uses NFC for Recovery Key and Ledger Security Key. The Security Key app lets you authenticate on compatible websites using FIDO U2F and FIDO2, including by holding the device against your phone. Depending on the service, this can provide a second authentication factor or passwordless sign-in; see the Security Key section<\/a> for compatibility details.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Storage<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The number of apps you can install at once depends on their size; My Ledger shows the available space. Uninstalling a blockchain app does not erase your private keys or affect your funds<\/strong>, which remain on the blockchain. If you run out of space, uninstall an app you are not currently using and install the one you need. Reinstalling the removed app lets you sign transactions on that network again. Security Key also takes up some storage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gen5\u2019s limitations<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gen5 has a plastic frame and back panel, keeping its weight down to 46 g. It is noticeably wider than the classic USB-stick-shaped Nano, though, so compare the dimensions before buying. Flex offers a metal frame and Gorilla Glass at a higher price.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Gen5\u2019s monochrome screen has a resolution of 300 \u00d7 400 pixels, compared with 480 \u00d7 600 pixels and 16 shades of gray on Flex. Gen5\u2019s screen is sufficient for checking addresses and signing transactions, but NFT images on the lock screen will look less detailed than on Flex.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Most of Ledger OS remains closed source<\/strong>. Although the code for many blockchain apps and the software running on Recovery Key is public, the publicly available code does not let you independently audit all of the device\u2019s software, so this model requires trust in Ledger and its auditors. The launch of Ledger Recover in 2023 showed that a firmware update can add the ability to export encrypted fragments of the recovery secret with the user\u2019s consent. Ledger Security Key does not currently support resident keys, the credentials that allow sign-in to begin without first entering a username. You therefore cannot register Gen5 as a passkey on services that require this type of credential. The app works over a cable or NFC for second-factor authentication and other supported uses; Bluetooth is not used for authentication<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Recovery Key can restore access only on Ledger Stax, Flex, and Nano Gen5.<\/strong> If you plan to use a different wallet, keep your written recovery words; see the section on the card<\/a> for details.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Nano X can serve as a second hardware wallet with the same keys, or as a storage device if you rarely make transfers. Ledger now positions it primarily as a backup model. Choose Flex if you want a sharper image, 16 shades of gray, and a metal frame.
