Trezor passphrase wallet:<\/strong> a common situation is that you connect your Trezor, enter the passphrase, and see a zero balance with no transaction history in Trezor Suite. Your first thought may be that the coins have been stolen. In most cases, the funds are still there\u2014you have simply opened a different wallet. Below, we explain how this works, five common reasons for an empty wallet, and a step-by-step plan for finding the wallet that holds your coins.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

How the Trezor passphrase wallet works: two minutes of theory<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Trezor combines your wallet backup (seed phrase) with a passphrase, an additional string of up to 50 characters from the standard ASCII set: letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and spaces. Every unique \u201cbackup + passphrase\u201d combination mathematically derives a separate wallet with its own private keys and addresses. A passphrase acts as a wallet generator, not as a password for a single existing wallet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This leads to the main rule behind almost every case of \u201cmissing\u201d funds: an \u201cincorrect\u201d passphrase does not produce an error. It opens a new, empty wallet. Trezor states this directly in its documentation: every passphrase you enter creates a separate wallet, even when it contains a typo. The device does not store the passphrase and has nothing to compare it with, so every string you enter is valid. A different string means a different wallet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In Trezor Suite, a wallet without a passphrase is called a Standard wallet and is derived only from the wallet backup. A wallet with a passphrase is a passphrase wallet, previously referred to as a hidden wallet. There is no practical limit to how many you can create: one unique passphrase produces one separate wallet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The same \u201cbackup + passphrase\u201d combination produces the same addresses in any compatible application, including Trezor Suite, Electrum, and Sparrow. The addresses are derived according to the same standards, so the specific application does not matter. This will be useful for verification later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Passphrases are case-sensitive, and a space is also a valid character. \u201cSea\u201d, \u201csea\u201d, and \u201csea \u201d with a trailing space are three different wallets. A passphrase cannot be changed, removed, or recovered. Trezor Support cannot see it and will never ask for it. Anyone who requests your passphrase \u201cfor recovery\u201d is a scammer.<\/p>\r\n

Why the wallet is empty: five common causes<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A typo, different capitalization, or an extra space<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This is the most common cause. One lowercase letter instead of an uppercase one, a space at the beginning or end, or similar characters such as O and 0 or l and 1 will make Suite open a new, empty wallet. You will never see an \u201cincorrect passphrase\u201d warning because, from the device\u2019s point of view, there is no such thing as an invalid passphrase.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Keyboard layout<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

When entering the passphrase on a computer, check the keyboard layout. Trezor highlights this in its official troubleshooting guidance: different layouts can produce different characters, even when the input appears visually similar. This is especially relevant when the system layout uses Cyrillic characters but the passphrase was created with the Latin alphabet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The wrong wallet type<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If you stored coins before enabling the passphrase feature, they are in the Standard wallet. Entering a passphrase opens a separate passphrase wallet, which may be empty, so the original funds will not appear. The reverse is also true: your coins may be in a passphrase wallet while you are viewing the Standard wallet. The passphrase feature is disabled by default for newly created or restored wallets. If the passphrase field does not appear, enable the feature in the Suite settings first.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The browser autofilled the passphrase field<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Trezor warns about another subtle possibility: the browser may offer to autofill the passphrase field. If a password manager inserted a saved value, you may have created a passphrase wallet without realizing which passphrase was used. If funds were later sent to that wallet, access depends on entering the exact same autofilled value. Check the passwords saved in the browser you used when connecting your Trezor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A different wallet backup<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This is less common: the device may have been reset and restored with a different seed phrase, for example when you have several backups or devices. A wallet is derived from the \u201cbackup + passphrase\u201d combination, so changing either part produces different addresses. The correct passphrase combined with a different seed will still open an empty wallet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
