Ledger Nano X battery conditioning

Ledger Nano X battery conditioning is a procedure that helps wake up the battery after long storage. You took out a Nano X that had been sitting unused for several weeks or months, and now it will not turn on, will not charge, or shows a battery warning. For a lithium-ion battery after long storage, this is normal and most often not a hardware failure. Ledger has a separate procedure for this: battery conditioning, after which the battery starts accepting charge again.

Your keys and funds remain safe. Access to the coins is tied to the seed phrase, so even if the device does not turn on, the funds are still there.

Ledger Nano X battery conditioning: what it means

Ledger calls this procedure battery conditioning: warming the battery so that a deeply discharged or cooled battery can start accepting charge again. Conditioning happens every time you connect the device to power, and normally you do not notice it. After weeks or months of storage, the battery sometimes needs a little manual help. Ledger compares it to a car battery that has been left in the cold: give it a few minutes, and it works again.

The reason is the chemistry of lithium-ion cells. The battery slowly loses charge even when the device is turned off, and after months of storage the level may drop so low that a deeply discharged cell stops accepting current. That is why the Nano X screen may stay dark during the first minutes on the cable. Warming brings the battery out of this state.

How to wake up the battery step by step

[vc_message color=”warning” message_box_style=”classic” message_box_color=”alert-warning” style=”rounded”]

Do not disconnect the cable while warming the device.

[/vc_message]

Connect the Nano X with the included USB-C cable to a powered USB port on a computer or to a USB charger.

Hold the device in your hands for a few minutes. The warmth of your hands returns the battery to a working state, and you can still use the device during this process.

Usually, 5-10 minutes is enough. For the most deeply discharged and cooled batteries, warming can take up to 30 minutes. While it is in progress, the screen may remain dark; this is normal.

The battery has returned to a working state when the charging icon appears on the screen: a battery with a lightning symbol.

After that, leave the Nano X connected until it reaches a full charge.

The device woke up: update everything outdated

After weeks or months of storage, the charge is not the only thing that may be outdated. In its article about battery issues, Ledger recommends checking the Ledger OS version: updates fix some charging-related problems. So once the Nano X has come back to life and charged, go through the updates in this order:

download the latest version of the Ledger Wallet app from ledger.com and connect the device;

open the My Ledger section and, if the app suggests it, update Ledger OS. Before updating, make sure your seed phrase is written down and close at hand: in rare cases, the device resets after an update, and then the wallet is restored with the 24 words;

update outdated coin apps on the device.

After that, the Nano X is ready to use: fresh firmware, current apps, and a charged battery.

If warming did not help

If after 30 minutes of warming the device still does not turn on, shows “Battery problem – Charging stopped”, or displays a temperature-related error, the reason is no longer just storage. A full breakdown of this error, including Control Center procedures, temperature causes, and cases where it is a hardware defect, is covered in our separate guide: Ledger Nano X: “Charging stopped” error and what to do.

If the steps from that guide also did not revive the device, you can proceed in two ways at once. The official way is through support.ledger.com: describe the problem and the steps already completed, including how long the device was stored, how long you warmed it, and whether the charging icon appeared. This will speed up diagnostics. The parallel way is through us: if you bought the device from us, we help our clients free of charge, work out together where the process gets stuck, and in a warranty case we will advise and help arrange a return or replacement.

How to prevent it from happening again

The main reason the battery “falls asleep” is long storage in a discharged state. To avoid this:

once every 3 months, connect the Nano X to a computer or charger and charge it fully, even if you are not using it;

before long-term storage, fully charge the device and turn it off; the worst scenario for the battery is months of storage in an almost discharged state;

store the device at 40-80% humidity and 20-25°C, away from heaters, windows with direct sunlight, and cold rooms.

Where to buy and where to ask for help

The typical story ends with warming: within 10-30 minutes, the charging icon appears on the screen, the device reaches a full charge, you update Ledger OS and the apps, and return to normal use. Set yourself a reminder to charge the Nano X once per quarter, and you should not need to come back to this article again.

Where to ask for help with a fault was covered above: officially through support.ledger.com, and if the device was bought from us, we help free of charge.

If you need a new Nano X or another model, you can order it directly from Ledger or from us.
