Your traffic is routed through that server: your internet service provider can see the VPN connection itself, but it cannot see the final websites in the same way it could over a direct connection, while websites see the VPN server&#8217;s IP address instead of your own. <strong>That is the basic idea behind a VPN.<\/strong> The differences between services come down to protocols, server infrastructure, and privacy practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What a VPN can do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Protect traffic on public networks.<\/strong> In a cafe, hotel, airport, or university network, the network operator may be able to observe part of your activity. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, so the local network cannot read its contents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Change your visible IP address and region.<\/strong> If you are abroad and need a Ukrainian IP address, you can connect to a server in Ukraine. Likewise, a server in another country can give you an IP address from that region when a service restricts access by location.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bypass ISP-level blocking.<\/strong> If your internet provider blocks domains at the DNS or transport layer, a VPN can often route around those restrictions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduce how much of your browsing activity your ISP can see.<\/strong> With a direct connection, your provider may receive information from DNS requests and other network metadata. A VPN shifts that trust from the ISP to the VPN provider, which is why the provider&#8217;s privacy policy matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What a VPN does NOT give you:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Complete anonymity online.<\/strong> If you sign in to your Google account while using a VPN, Google can still identify you through the account, cookies, and your browser fingerprint. A VPN changes your IP address; it does not automatically hide your identity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection from phishing or malicious websites.<\/strong> A VPN encrypts your traffic, but it does not decide whether the link you clicked is legitimate. A phishing page still reaches you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection from browser fingerprinting.<\/strong> Websites can identify you using a combination of browser settings, fonts, Canvas behavior, GPU details, and many other signals. A VPN does not hide those. Browsers such as Tor Browser, Mullvad Browser, or a properly configured Brave browser are designed to address that problem more directly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection from malware already running on your device.<\/strong> If the system itself is compromised, a VPN does not fix that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Start with your threat model<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before choosing a VPN, answer one question honestly: who are you trying to protect yourself from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your ISP or the operator of a public network.<\/strong> A reputable VPN that encrypts traffic to its servers and does not keep activity logs is usually enough for this scenario.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Advertising networks and large online platforms.<\/strong> A VPN helps only partly. It hides your real IP address and makes location-based tracking harder, but it does not remove cookies, advertising identifiers, or your browser fingerprint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Government filtering or network blocking.<\/strong> The requirements depend on the country. For ordinary privacy, a VPN with independent audits and a clear no-logs policy may be enough. In networks that actively detect and block VPN traffic, you may need obfuscation or specialized connection modes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An adversary that can observe large parts of the network.<\/strong> A single VPN is not enough for that threat model. Tor, strict separation between identities, dedicated devices, and disciplined OPSEC become more important, and even then there is no absolute guarantee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more clearly you understand your threat model, the easier it is to choose the right tool. For everyday use, the usual goals are protecting traffic on networks you do not control, hiding your real IP address from websites, and reducing the amount of network metadata available to your ISP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A VPN protocol defines how your device establishes the secure connection to the server and how encrypted traffic is transported. Modern VPN services most commonly use WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2\/IPsec, or a provider-specific protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WireGuard.<\/strong> For most users, this is the best modern default. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wireguard.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official WireGuard website<\/a> describes it as a fast, compact protocol built around modern cryptography. Its relatively small codebase makes auditing easier, and in practice WireGuard usually delivers high speeds and works well on mobile devices. It uses primitives including ChaCha20, Curve25519, and BLAKE2s. <strong>If your VPN supports WireGuard, it is usually the first protocol worth trying.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OpenVPN.<\/strong> A mature protocol that has been in use since 2001. It is well studied and remains useful in corporate and unusual network environments, although it is often slower than WireGuard. Mullvad is phasing out OpenVPN in 2026 in favor of WireGuard, while other providers still support both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IKEv2\/IPsec.<\/strong> Useful on mobile devices because it can recover connections quickly when you switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data. For ordinary use, however, there is usually little reason to choose it over WireGuard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Provider-specific protocols.<\/strong> NordVPN&#8217;s NordLynx is built on WireGuard and adds its own approach to user address management. ExpressVPN&#8217;s Lightway was developed separately, has undergone Cure53 audits, and is designed for fast reconnection with low overhead. Both work well for everyday use, while open WireGuard remains easier to evaluate independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What should you use by default?<\/strong> For most situations, start with WireGuard or a modern provider protocol based on it. The most common mistake is treating a VPN as an &#8220;anonymity button.&#8221; It is not. The settings below are the ones that actually matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Privacy is not the same as anonymity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privacy and anonymity are often treated as the same thing, but they solve different problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Privacy means<\/strong> that other parties on the network get less information about your traffic. For example, the operator of a hotel Wi-Fi network cannot read the traffic between your device and the VPN server, while a website sees the VPN server&#8217;s IP address instead of yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Anonymity means<\/strong> that your online activity cannot be reliably linked back to your real-world identity. A VPN does not provide that on its own. If you sign in to your Google, Telegram, or exchange account, the service can identify you through the account regardless of which IP address you use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bottom line:<\/strong> a VPN improves connection privacy, but it does not guarantee anonymity. If your goal is to keep an activity separate from your real identity, you need separate accounts, a separate browser profile or Tor, and stricter OPSEC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Anonymous payment: when it actually matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your payment method can link a VPN account to your billing information. If you pay with a bank card, the provider or its payment processor receives more identifying information even if the VPN itself does not keep activity logs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most users, that is not a major concern. If you use a VPN to protect traffic on public Wi-Fi or to change your IP address, paying with a normal card does not cancel those benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A more private payment method matters when the fact that you use a VPN could itself create risk, or when you do not want the VPN account to be easily linked to banking information. In that case, look at what payment data is collected by both the VPN provider and its payment partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Services that support more private payment options:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mullvad<\/strong> accepts Monero, Bitcoin, and cash sent by mail. It does not require an email address to register and instead gives you a 16-digit account number. Cryptocurrency payments receive a 10% discount.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NordVPN<\/strong> accepts cryptocurrency. An email address is required, but it does not have to be your primary address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Proton VPN<\/strong> accepts cryptocurrency and also offers a usable free tier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For users who want to minimize the link between payment and identity, Monero can be more private than a bank card or cryptocurrency purchased through a KYC exchange. Payment privacy still does not replace a no-logs policy and does not make the VPN account anonymous by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">DNS and WebRTC leaks: what to check<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If DNS requests bypass the VPN tunnel, your ISP or another DNS operator may still be able to see which domains you are requesting. This is known as a <strong>DNS leak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WebRTC is used for browser-based voice and video communication. With the wrong browser or VPN configuration, it can expose network information that you did not intend to reveal to websites, so it is worth testing separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How to test:<\/strong> use dnsleaktest.com or ipleak.net for DNS, and browserleaks.com\/webrtc for WebRTC. Connect to the VPN first, then open the test. If you see your real public IP address or DNS servers associated with your ISP when you should not, investigate the configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to do:<\/strong> first check whether the VPN app uses its own DNS servers and whether it includes dedicated leak protection. If the WebRTC test reveals network information you do not want exposed, review your browser settings or use a browser profile configured for privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Kill switch: protection when the VPN disconnects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kill switch blocks ordinary internet access if the VPN connection unexpectedly drops. Without it, your device may automatically fall back to a direct connection and websites can once again see your real IP address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it matters to you that your real IP address never appears during a disconnect, <strong>keep the kill switch enabled.<\/strong> Proton VPN and NordVPN call the feature Kill Switch, while Mullvad also offers Lockdown mode.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>[vc_message color=&#8221;warning&#8221; message_box_style=&#8221;classic&#8221; message_box_color=&#8221;alert-warning&#8221; style=&#8221;rounded&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>If the VPN connection drops, a kill switch prevents the device from silently returning to a normal connection with your real IP address. Check that the feature is enabled, especially if you use a VPN for more than simply changing your region.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_message]<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Do not mix &#8220;anonymous&#8221; activity with personal accounts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are trying to keep a specific activity separate from your real identity, signing in to your normal Gmail, Telegram, exchange, or other personal account breaks that separation. The service can see which account used a particular VPN address at a particular time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For that kind of threat model, use separate accounts and a separate browser profile, and do not mix them with your personal accounts. That matters more than constantly switching VPN servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">Your browser can matter more than your VPN<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Websites do not identify you by IP address alone. A browser fingerprint combines extensions, fonts, Canvas behavior, GPU information, language settings, and many other characteristics. In some cases that fingerprint can be distinctive enough to recognize you even after you change your IP address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If privacy is your goal:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Basic level:<\/strong> Brave or Firefox with tracker protection enabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stronger privacy:<\/strong> Mullvad Browser. It is based on Tor Browser but does not connect to the Tor network, and it is designed to reduce differences between browser configurations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Higher anonymity:<\/strong> Tor Browser. It is slower and may trigger additional verification on some sites, but it is better at resisting identification through IP addresses and browser fingerprints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A VPN plus your everyday Chrome profile with all of your usual extensions is primarily an IP-address change, not full anonymity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">What to avoid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Free VPNs.<\/strong> A free tier is not automatically unsafe: Proton VPN Free and Windscribe Free both have a clear business model. The real problem is an unknown service that does not explain how it makes money, what data it collects, or who owns it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hola:<\/strong> in 2015, users&#8217; bandwidth was resold through a separate commercial service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Onavo:<\/strong> Facebook used data from the service for competitive analysis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hotspot Shield:<\/strong> researchers described a vulnerability in 2018 that could expose a user&#8217;s real IP address and location; the free tier also relies on an advertising model.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>VPNs with unclear jurisdiction or data-access rules.<\/strong> If a service operates in a country with aggressive state control over the internet, check the local data-retention requirements, how government requests are handled, and how independent the provider really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>VPNs with no independent verification of their no-logs policy.<\/strong> The statement &#8220;we don&#8217;t keep logs&#8221; proves nothing by itself. In 2017, PureVPN provided the FBI with session logs despite marketing itself as a no-logs service. What matters is independent auditing, technical architecture, and how the provider has handled real legal requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>VPNs with opaque ownership.<\/strong> Before paying, check who owns the brand and what other services belong to the same group. ExpressVPN, for example, is owned by Kape Technologies. A large parent company does not automatically make a VPN bad, but ownership is relevant when you evaluate transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">What to look for when choosing a VPN service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost every VPN website promises speed, privacy, and no logs, so marketing claims alone are not enough. <strong>Compare providers using concrete criteria:<\/strong> jurisdiction, independent audits, server infrastructure, protocols, payment methods, and the features you actually need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jurisdiction.<\/strong> The country where a company is registered affects the laws it operates under, including data-retention rules and participation in international intelligence-sharing arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Generally favorable jurisdictions:<\/strong> Switzerland (Proton VPN), Panama (NordVPN), the British Virgin Islands (ExpressVPN), Sweden (Mullvad; despite Sweden&#8217;s membership in the 14 Eyes, Swedish law does not require VPN providers to retain activity logs), and Romania (CyberGhost, outside the 5\/9\/14 Eyes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jurisdictions that deserve closer scrutiny:<\/strong> the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, which form the 5 Eyes intelligence alliance, as well as countries in the wider 9 and 14 Eyes arrangements such as the Netherlands, France, and Germany.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High-risk jurisdictions for privacy-focused use:<\/strong> Russia, China, and Iran.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jurisdiction matters, but it should not be evaluated in isolation from the provider&#8217;s technical design and retention practices. PIA operates in the United States but has been unable to provide user activity logs in court cases. Surfshark is registered in the Netherlands but has undergone independent reviews of its no-logs policy. <strong>Do not look only at the country of registration; look at what data the service is technically capable of storing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Verification of the no-logs policy.<\/strong> A provider&#8217;s own promise is not enough. Look for several independent signals: audits, transparency reports, and evidence of how the service has responded to real requests for user data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"nm-block-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Independent audits.<\/strong> External firms such as Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, or Cure53 review the provider&#8217;s stated policy, infrastructure, or server configuration. This is the basic way to back marketing claims with outside verification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transparency reports.<\/strong> A provider regularly publishes information about how many data requests it received and how it responded. Proton VPN and CyberGhost publish this kind of information on a regular basis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Real-world legal requests.<\/strong> When law enforcement requests user data and the provider cannot supply activity logs, that gives practical evidence that the stated policy matches the system design. Mullvad and PIA have both faced cases of this kind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>RAM-only servers.<\/strong> With this architecture, working data is kept in volatile memory rather than on persistent storage, so it does not survive a server reboot. RAM-only infrastructure does not replace a no-logs policy, but it reduces the amount of data that could remain on a physically seized server. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, and Mullvad are among the providers that use RAM-only infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Server and country count.<\/strong> Bigger numbers are useful only if they give you the locations you need and stable capacity.
